Missing Law Students at Michigan and FIU
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 5:56 PM
<snipped>
In early November, Tom “Tommy”’ Daniels, 28, a law student at Florida International University, was reported missing. According to a news release issued by FIU, Tom Daniels was in contact with Miami Beach police on November 5 — three days after he was last seen by his friends, but before he was officially reported missing. More details appear in the Miami Herald; the full news release, including a number to call if you have information about Daniels’s whereabouts, appears after the jump.

More recently, a law student at the University of Michigan was reported missing. According to the Michigan Daily, Casey Neil McGinnis, 35, was last seen on November 11. Parents and friends of Casey McGinnis have conveyed their concern about his whereabouts to the Ann Arbor police.

Earlier this year, Annie Le, a Yale graduate student, was found dead in a research building on the university’s New Haven campus — on the day she was to be married. A lab co-worker of hers, Raymond Clark, stands accused of the murder.

Taken together, these recent developments raise the question: are American universities doing enough to keep their students safe? Or are these just coincidences, isolated occurrences that don’t say anything about campus safety?

Wednesday November 25, 2009
<snipped>
According to the warrant for his arrest:

•Clark and Le's DNA were found on a sock in the ceiling near her body.

•A bloodstained rubber glove and a pair of stained work boots with "Ray-C" on them were found in another part of the ceiling.

•Clark attempted the block from the view of a Yale police officer a bloodstained box in the lab.

•Clark was seen trying to clean the basement floor with steel wool, although the floor appeared to be clean.

"One of the clues that lead the New Haven, Conn. Police Department to the murderer of a Yale lab technician was the audit logs of the physical access control system in place at the research facility. The card swipe logs showed that Raymond Clark III was the last person to access the lab where Annie Le’s body was discovered and proved to be a key piece of evidence that lead to his arrest."

Of course, Annie Le's body was not discovered in a lab; nor have we heard anything about Clark (or, for that matter, anyone else) swiping his card into the room in which it was found.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Police found blood on the kitchen floor of the home of a Yale University lab technician charged with killing a Yale graduate student days before her wedding, according to search warrant affidavits released Wednesday.

....

Two days before Clark was arrested, investigators said they found blood "in plain view" on the kitchen floor near the entrance to his apartment. Authorities took plastic door panels and carpeting with "blood-like stains" from the Taurus in which Clark was riding in the hours after Le's disappearance.

Eight affidavits released in the Annie Le slaying case (with documents)
Wednesday, December 2, 2009
<snipped>
Search warrant affidavits released today in the investigation of the slaying of Yale graduate student Annie Le say blood-like stains were found on the kitchen floor of Clark’s Middletown apartment, and his car contained clothing with reddish stains.

When police searched Clark’s residence on Sept. 15, two days after Le’s body was found at a Yale research center on Amistad Street, "blood-like stains were located in plain view on the kitchen floor," the warrant stated. A lab test confirmed the stains were caused by blood, the document added.

Annie Le Warrants: Blood Found In Kitchen, Car
December 2, 2009 10:19AM
<snipped>
Two days before police arrested Ray Clark for murder, they found blood “in plain view” on the kitchen floor of his Middletown apartment.

Police later found blood stains inside a red Ford Taurus in which Clark was seen riding right away from the scene where Yale grad student Annie Le was killed.

On Sept. 13, police found Annie Le’s email address inside inside a locker labeled “RAY” at 10 Amistad, according to the affidavits.

Raymond Clark III sent e-mails to 24-year-old Annie Le "in the recent past," the affidavits said. Her e-mail address was found in a laboratory locker labeled "Ray," the documents said.

Clark has not yet entered a plea. His public defender, Joe Lopez, did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday.

The affidavits show that police searched for evidence in Clark's home, two cars that he used and numerous lockers in the laboratory building where Le's body was found.

The suspect "has gone to great lengths to conceal evidence in multiple locations in unusual places," the affidavits said.

Investigators found a white rag, tweezers, scissors, a screwdriver and several plastic tubes in a clogged drain pipe in the building where Le's body was found, the affidavits said.

The 80 pages of search and seizure warrants track police progress as they investigated Le’s Sept. 8 disappearance, detailing their search of 10 Amistad St., the Yale laboratory building where police found Le's body, as well as Clark’s Middletown, Conn., apartment and his car. According to the documents, police also gathered evidence even after Clark’s Sept. 17 arrest, seizing his cell phone records. Despite the documents' new revelations, a motive remains unclear.

In addition to finding blood stains "in plain view" on the kitchen floor in Clark's apartment, police discovered a pair of bloody white Converse sneakers, stained hospital scrubs and a dark garbage bag in Clark's red 2000 Ford Mustang , according to the warrants.

The search warrants also state that a locker labeled "Ray" contained Le's email address, and that investigators used chemical analysis to uncover blood-like stains that had been cleaned off a wall of a lab. Later testing showed the stains were blood.

Clark is being held, with bail set at $3 million, at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield. He is due back in court Dec. 21.

Newly released search warrants in the murder case of a Yale graduate student show that police recovered over 700 items as they built their case against the suspect, Raymond Clark.

The documents also reveal how a cadaver dog lead detectives to Le's body.

"Loose insulation was removed from the inside opening of the mechanical chase and placed on top of the female body in order to conceal her," the warrant reads.

Two days after Le's body was found, police say they saw in plain view in the backseat of Clark's car a white shoe with reddish stains, blue scrubs and a garbage bag. Clark's Ford Mustang was seized the next day.

Several pairs of scrub pants, a fishing tackle kit equipped with a fishing line and tackle, as well as white sneakers with unknown "reddish stains" were also found in Clark's car.

Video surveillance from Sept. 8, the day Le is believed to have been murdered, show Clark wearing white sneakers.

Hairs and fibers were also found in Clark's car, according to the warrant.

In addition, Clark's DNA was found on items that were discovered with the body.

Recently Released Warrants Offer New Detail in Le Slaying
Updated 11:39 AM EST, Wed, Dec 2, 2009
<snipped>
On Sept. 22, police found evidence that appears someone was trying to hide items inside the Animal Lab Research Center.

A large empty plastic bag, a white rag, tweezers and several plastic tubes were found stuffed into a drainpipe.

“These items were past the debris basket which meant that ... someone would have to remove the debris basket and discard said items into the drain pipe,” the warrant says.

Yale staff realized on Sept. 11 that the drain was clogged but did not report it until Sept. 22, when there were more problems with the drain. It was only then that plumbers found those items, along with a screwdriver at the bottom of the pipe.

The documents said that investigators found Ms. Le’s e-mail address in a laboratory locker labeled “Ray.” But the documents said a check of Mr. Clark’s cellphone and Internet use after the killing was inconclusive.

The documents also said investigators had failed to find a number of items despite extensive searches. Among them were Ms. Le’s shoes and a notebook she always carried to record data from her experiments.

Also still missing was the lanyard Mr. Clark wore around his neck with his electronic key card, which would have given him access to the lab.

The detectives also have not tracked down shoelaces for a pair of bloody boots marked “Ray-C” that they found in the locker room.

Annie Le Search Warrants: Cops Found Blood on Yale Lab Tech Raymond Clark's Floor
December 2, 2009 4:32 PM
<snipped>
While Officer Wood stood guard and waited for agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the affidavit states that she observed Clark come in and walked directly to the cart where the box was, looked at the box of wipes and then ?stood between Officer Wood and the cart, and then turned and faced Officer Wood,?. Clark then moved the box of wipes to try and conceal the blood, and tried to make small talk with Officer Wood to distract her, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also states that sometime later Officer Wood observed Clark enter the lab "with a box of SOS pads and a bottle of cleaning solution. Mr. Clark then proceeded to clean the floor/grate drain...the grate is located under the only sink in the room." Sergeant Jay Jones, also of the Yale Police Department, corroborated Officer Wood's observations and added, during a later interview with FBI agents, that he didn't think the floor needed cleaning, according to the affidavits.

The affidavits also state that Clark sent emails to 24-year-old Annie Le "in the recent past," and that her email address was found in a laboratory locker labeled "Ray,".

Attorney says DNA sought from Yale suspect fiancee
By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN (AP) – 13 minutes ago
HARTFORD, Conn. — An attorney for the fiancee of a Yale lab technician charged with killing a graduate student says he's been told authorities are seeking a sample of her DNA.
Robert Berke, attorney for Jennifer Hramadka (rah-MAHD'-kuh), told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it's unclear why authorities want her DNA. He says he has been told she is not a suspect.
Berke says investigators have wanted to interview Hramadka, but the interview did not take place.
A prosecutor and police declined to comment.
Her boyfriend, Raymond Clark III, has been charged with killing 24-year-old Annie Le (LAY'), five days before Le's wedding in September.
Records show Clark and Hramadka were seen leaving a coffee shop in a car in which "blood-like stains" were found hours after Le was killed.

LE WARRANT: Blood-like stains found in Clark’s kitchen, cars

One of the affidavits has new information tracking Clark’s activities Sept. 8, the day police believe Le was killed. Videotape footage from the research building reportedly shows Clark leaving the front entrance at 3:54 p.m. After walking north on Cedar Street, he entered a coffee shop at Cedar Street and Congress Avenue.

Four minutes later, the affidavit says, Clark left the shop with his fiancee, Jennifer Hramadka, and another woman who was not identified. The three of them reportedly got into a red Ford Taurus with the unidentified woman driving and Clark riding in the front-passenger seat.

Video footage at Clark’s apartment complex showed the trio arriving there at 4:35 p.m., according to the affidavit. Parts of the affidavits were blacked-out, apparently for privacy reasons, so the name of the person who owned the Taurus was obscured.

Documents offer details of Yale killing

Police found white sneakers with reddish stains, hospital scrubs and a garbage bag on the back seat of Clark's red Ford Mustang, the documents said.

The documents do not say whether the blood came from Clark, Le or someone else.

Clark's attorney Joe Lopez, an assistant public defender, says the evidence presented in the newly released documents may be enough for a judge to allow a search but isn't enough to convict Clark.

"We have a pile 8 inches thick of police reports. We're expecting boxes. Until we look at everything, we won't know the big picture," Lopez said in an interview Wednesday. "They have established enough probable cause to get a search warrant. That's all far short of proof beyond a reasonable doubt."
