'Friend' of dead businessman arrested in Mexico
Updated: Tue Nov. 23 2010 11:54:34 AM

[snipped...] A self-identified friend of a slain Canadian businessman has told Mexican state police that he is responsible for putting Daniel Dion's dead body in a car that was set ablaze.

[snipped from further down...] The state prosecutor of Guerrero told a local news agency that state police have since arrested 46-year-old Hector Juan Figueroa, who has provided them with details of Dion's death.

Figueroa told police that he was friends with Dion, who he claims often stayed at an apartment that belonged to Figueroa's mother.

On the night of Oct. 23, Figueroa said he came home to find Dion had been drinking.

He said Dion began to hit him. In self-defence, Figueroa said he struck his friend in the head, which caused his death.

Figueroa told police he then put Dion's body in a car, drove to a remote area and set it on fire.

Family of man killed in Mexico doubts confession

Mexican police say Hector Figueroa, 46, a friend and former employee of Dion's, claims he punched the Canadian once, killing him.
Sylvie Dion said she doesn't believe Figueroa. Speaking in French, she told CBC News it has been years since her 51-year-old brother had a drink. She also said Figueroa's claim Dion was killed by a single blow to the head was inconsistent with a pathologist's report.
"The statement where [Figueroa] reveals these facts isn't enough," Leyva said in Spanish.

"We need proof to corroborate the confession that he made."

While Figueroa was serving a 15-year jail sentence for murder, he worked as one of 2,200 inmates Dion employed to make his line of eco-purses, police said. The two men met when Figueroa was released, and became friends.

Mexican police are now searching for Figueroa’s son, who has been missing since the investigation began into Dion's death.

Mexican police eye second suspect in death of Carleton Place man

By Ian MacLeod, The Ottawa Citizen November 24, 2010 4:09 AM

With one man in custody, Mexican police are now investigating a second person in the killing of Carleton Place businessman Daniel Dion, says his widow.
After his release from prison, Figueroa helped set up and service computers for Dion, who maintained an apartment in Chilpancingo, about 115 kilometres from Acapulco. When in Acapulco, Dion sometime stayed overnight at the apartment of Figueroa's mother, said Dion's wife.

Dion was last seen at about 2 a.m. on Oct. 23 when he left an Acapulco restaurant with three men and apparently drove to the mother's apartment.

According to the prosecutor's press release, Figueroa allegedly told police he arrived at the apartment at dawn that morning and found Dion intoxicated.

"He began to hit (Figueroa), and while defending himself, Hector Juan Figueroa hit him in the head and killed him," says the release.
Instead, his wife and family suspect his death had something to do with a lumber purchase he was about to close. "He was closing a deal and I think maybe some Mexicans planned some business there, too, and they didn't want a Canadian to take over. That's the only thing we can think of," she said.

there's a lot more in this article: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Cars/Mexican+police+second+suspect+death+Carleton+Place/3875626/story.html

So HJF killed DD in self-defense, by one single blow to the head. In previous article it says: "claims he punched the Canadian once" so that would mean he didn't even use an object, just a punch.

I am wondering if Dion's family was able to view that bar's surveillance video to determine if one of those 3 men is in fact Figueroa.

I tend to agree with some of the comments in the article, that there is more to the story, JMHO.

Hope they got the right man.
