In 2021, authorities stated Parlier had "links" to Harold David Haulman III, a suspected serial killer who has been charged with the murders of two young women in Pennsylvania. He met both alleged victims, Tianna Phillips and Erica Shultz, through an online dating app. Phillips's body has never been found.

A photo of Haulman is posted with this case summary. He lived in the Battle Creek area between 2002 and 2009 and is believed to have known Parlier. When he was interviewed by police in January 2021, Haulman asked if all three cases, that of Phillips, Schultz and Parlier, could be combined because he wasn't interested in a trial. Parlier's name had not been mentioned in the investigation before.

Haulman subsequently confessed to Parlier's murder. He said they had an argument at a home in Emmet Township, Michigan, and he assaulted her and knocked her unconscious. He drove her to a remove area, struck her in the head with a piece of wood until she died, and later disposed of his bloodstained clothing. In July 2021, Haulman was charged with Parlier's murder. He is still in custody in Pennsylvania awaiting trial in the other cases, and it's not clear when he will be extradited to Michigan.

Parlier is a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and was employed at a Taco Bell restaurant in the 800 block of Capital Avenue northeast in June 2005. She was saving up money to get her own car. Since Parlier went missing, there has been no activity on her Social Security number.

Her body has not been found, but foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.

Accused serial killer set for pre-trial hearing in September

Harold David Haulman III, 43, who told authorities he was unsure if he would have killed again if he hadn’t been caught, researched serial killers, Hannibal Lector and “Silence of the Lambs,” according to court documents, is now set for a pre-trial conference prior to going to trial on the two murder charges.

Haulman was arrested earlier this year for the murders of McClure resident Tianna Phillips, 25, who went missing in 2018, and Bloomsburg resident Erica Shultz, 26, who went missing late last year.

During the course of interviews with former Bloomsburg state trooper Shawn Williams, now Shikellamyy Area School District Police Chief, said Haulman spoke about a third murder, involving, Ashley Parlier, 21, of Battle Creek, Michigan, in 2005, police said.

Williams contacted Michigan authorities and when Calhoun County Detective John Pignataro arrived in Pennsylvania he spoke with Haulman, who according to court documents, admitted to murdering Parlier and Joseph Whitehurst, in Ramstein, Germany, in 1999.

Haulman was then arrested for the Parlier murder, and family members of all three victims are expected to be in Luzerne County for the Sept. 9 hearing being held at 1:30 p.m. at the Luzerne County Courthouse, in Wilkes-Barre.

Michigan authorities said Thursday they have not had Haulman back in Michigan yet where he will be arraigned for the Parlier murder and they are waiting until after the Sept. 9 hearing, in which they will attend.

Haulman said he struck Parlier several times in the head, removed his bloody clothing and then watched her for a couple of minutes before realizing she was dead, then he took a shower, according to police. Haulman said he disposed of her clothing at his then place of employment and followed up on the case through the years, police said.

Like the case of Phillips, Haulman admitted to going back to the location in Michigan to see where he said he disposed of the body, and all he found were “bones,” according to police.

He met both alleged victims, Tianna Phillips and Erica Shultz, through an online dating app. Phillips's body has never been found. These women's murders were not the first homicides Haulman had been charged with.

In 1999, at the age of 20, Haulman had pleaded guilty to killing an acquaintance, Joseph Lawrence "Jay" Whitehurst, the 21-year-old son of a U.S. Air Force colonel. Whitehurst had been beaten to death with a club. Because people under the age of 21 are considered juveniles in German criminal courts and because Haulman had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, he served only six years in a German reform school for Whitehurst's death.

A photo of Haulman is posted with this case summary. He lived in the Battle Creek area between 2002 and 2009 and is believed to have known Parlier. Ashley Parlier’s family: Killer’s apology ‘doesn’t mean anything’ | WOODTV.com
[...]

“I didn’t want that to happen with Ashley. That one I regret more than any of them. She was just a confused girl. She came to me for help and things got out of hand. I just… I lost control of myself on that one,” said Haulman during the two hour long interview. “I felt really bad after Ashley. I was drunk for probably about three weeks straight after that because I wanted to forget it ever happened.”

During the interview, Haulman gave details about what he says he did after assaulting Parlier in 2005 and where he left her body.

“It was a field, overgrown, middle of nowhere Michigan and it’s 10 miles from town. There’s like a garage close by or something or a small house but it was empty. We sat there. I sat there kind of in my own world,” said Haulman. “(Ashley) was in the back, just out and I was sitting there and no cars drove by. The longer I sat there the more I thought this is as good a place as any. Then it happened. I took her out and took her to the spot and finished the job.”

Haulman told the reporter he “bashed” Parlier with a log in the head until she died. He says he did not bury her body. Police believe the two were previously in some sort of romantic relationship.

[...]

When asked if he has anything he’d like to say to the family of his victims, Haulman said there are no words that would suffice. He went on to insinuate allowing the families to beat him with a log might give them relief.

“He’s right. His apology doesn’t mean anything to me. Sixteen years ago? Maybe, but I had to watch my parents struggle and suffer. I’ve had to struggle and suffer. He’s taken two more lives since. No, his apology doesn’t mean anything to me. His snarky remark about handing me a log… he’s not good enough for a log. He’s good enough for 16-20 years sitting in prison and that’s what he’s good enough for,” said Campen.

Haulman has not been arraigned yet on the charges in Parlier’s case in Michigan. Police say there is no court date set yet. They say Haulman has to finish court proceedings in Pennsylvania before being extradited back to Calhoun County.

Pennsylvania man charged in 2005 disappearance, killing of 21-year-old Ashley Parlier

A Pennsylvania man has been charged with first-degree murder in the June 2005 disappearance of Ashley Marie Parlier.

Harold David Haulman III, 44, was arraigned in Calhoun County District Court Wednesday afternoon in connection with the disappearance of Parlier, 21, of Battle Creek.

Haulman, who once lived in Battle Creek, became a suspect in the disappearance of Parlier during an investigation in the deaths of two women in eastern Pennsylvania.

Haulman pleaded guilty to both Pennsylvania murders in 2021 and is currently serving life sentences without the possibility parole in those cases. As part of a plea deal with Luzerne County District Attorney's Office, Haulman has agreed cooperate with Calhoun County detectives and is expected to plead guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Parlier in exchange for the state of Pennsylvania not seeking the death penalty.

He also served jail time in reference to a 1999 homicide in Ramstein, Germany.

"We know it means a lot to the family of Ashley Parlier and the friends of Ashley," Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert said of Wednesday's arraignment. "Some people had been suspects for a really, really long time and now they have that weight taken off their shoulders."

Haulman will remain lodged at the Calhoun County Jail throughout the disposition of his case. Attorney Magistrate Amber Straub denied bond in the case Wednesday.

Parlier, who had the mental capabilities of a 14-year-old, was pregnant and had been working at Taco Bell on Capital Avenue Northeast to save money for a car, her family said after her disappearance.

Her father said she left the house June 12, 2005, with $700 in cash and was never seen again.

At the time, police questioned friends and her boyfriend, but never found any evidence connecting Haulman to her disappearance. Battle Creek detectives, who had the case for years, presumed the woman was dead although several searches failed to locate her remains.

The case was transferred to the sheriff department two years ago after detectives concluded that Parlier likely died outside the city of Battle Creek.

Calhoun County Sheriff's Department Detective Jon Pignataro said Haulman, who was described as transient and without a permanent address in Pennsylvania, lived in Battle Creek's Lakeview neighborhood and the Fairfax Addition in Emmett Township between 2005 and 2009. He worked at Meijer on Beckley Road, II Stanley and the former Nottke Bowl on Columbia Avenue.

Detectives were contacted by Pennsylvania law enforcement in 2021 after Haulman provided them with details regarding Parlier's disappearance and the possible location of her body in the north section of Newton Township.

Haulman had told detectives he met Parlier and her parents at the bowling alley, according to court papers, and that he talked with Parlier. Then she went to his home after calling and telling him her parents wanted her to take a pregnancy test.

Haulman also said that he was the father of Parlier's child.

Parlier was killed in woods south of Battle Creek in Newton Township, Haulman told detectives. He said he argued with Parlier and killed her by hitting her several times with a piece of wood on the evening of June 13, 2005.

Haulman said he returned to the scene several weeks or months later and only found bones, according to court papers.

Officers have searched for her body and brought Haulman to the area in late June 2021 but he was unable to direct detectives to the place he said he killed Parlier. Detectives have said they will continue their search for information about the location of her remains.

"We have every intention of bringing Ashley Parlier home if we have the opportunity to," Calhoun County Sheriff's Department Detective Dave Homminga said Wednesday.

Haulman is currently serving life sentences for two additional murders. One occurred on approximately June 13, 2018, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and the second occurred on December 4, 2020, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

While detectives expect Haulman to abide by the terms of the plea agreement, Gilbert acknowledged "it's all in the defendant's hands at this point," and he could back out of the deal.

"(It's) a little more difficult without a body, but in this case I believe we have sufficient evidence to take this case to trial and get a conviction," Gilbert said.

Detectives acknowledge the investigation could not have gotten to this point without the assistance of the Battle Creek Police Department, Michigan State Police, FBI, Pennsylvania State Police and Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office, among other agencies.

"We really took a real strong sense of ownership on this case, a great sense of teamwork and we really tried to stay as much in contact with the family as possible," Pignataro said. "It’s just been a very, very long road. We’re really excited and very proud that we got to this point."

"Whenever you’re talking about a family that’s lost somebody who’s missing, you don’t know what’s happened to them. You don’t know if they’re alive or dead," Gilbert added. "There’s more closure when we have the body, but there’s a form of closure knowing what happened. Up until this point, no one knew what happened. That’s very important to the family."

Haulman is scheduled to appear for a pre-exam conference in Calhoun County District Court Dec. 22. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 29.

''Court documents related to the case show Haulman also served time in Germany in connection with the 1999 homicide of Joseph Lawrence Whitehurst, the son of a US Air Force colonel, according to Stars and Stripes.

He has also lived in California, Maryland and Illinois.''
