MI MI - Mary Lands, 39, Marshall, 12 Mar 2004

October is domestic violence awareness month and now, one of West Michigan's best-known missing persons cases will help bring awareness to the issue.

Mary Lands has been missing for more than seven years. Her parents say she was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her fiancé and they say they didn't know that until after she was gone and they don't want the same thing to happen to anyone else.

Mary Lands was declared dead in 2011 but her body has never been found.

Family, friends and the investigator in her case are still hoping her body will be discovered and her killer will be brought to justice.

Wednesday morning at 10:00 they're holding a memorial vigil in the chapel of the Craig Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall.

I found the article above today and I thought I would post it. I hope there are some leads in Mary's case soon and her family find out what happened.

The case continues to remind the community about domestic violence, according to Jennifer Fopma, director of SAFE Place, a Battle Creek shelter for victims of the crime. Fopma said victims of domestic violence like Lands are scared to stay in the relationship and afraid to leave.

“When a woman leaves, her risk of being murdered increases by 75 percent,” Fopma said, because the crime is one of control. “This is not a private family matter, it is a crime. And it’s devastating if we let it continue in silence. This is a community issue. This case really highlights how difficult it is for a domestic victim to leave. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t leave, but it is more difficult than people believe. Let’s give Mary the voice she deserves and end domestic violence.”
