MI MI - New Buffalo, "Betty the Bag Lady", WhtFem 65-75, UP8224, wrapped in sheet/towel/2 bags, Aug'92

not just that Cubby, but a care facility in Indiana or Illinois to boot. I assume they are being tight lipped because it is a homicide investigation but unless they dole out some details, how is anyone going to figure out who she is?

<snip> found wrapped in a sheet and plastic bags and dumped along Krueger Road near New Buffalo twenty years ago this month.

<snip>

The sheet was the kind used in institutions and nursing homes, suggesting she had been in one or the other prior to her death.

Very short article. Goes on to say authorities believe she was dumped across state line so someone could go on collecting her social security.

New Buffalo, is not far from the lake and is a tourist/summer vacation home/area for Chicago area residents. It's a short drive around the lake from the Chicago area through NW Indiana and into MI.

I thought I'd add that for those non local who may not be familiar with the New Buffalo area.

From the link tarabull posted:

The body was wrapped in a sheet, towel and garbage bags and bound with twine.

I wonder if both the sheet and towel were institutional, or just the sheet.

the social security check motive is real and has been done before. only problem is that at some point in time a person must die and they need a death certificate to verify it. the flip side of that is I think (not sure) that when people get really old, the Soc Sec Admin actually looks into making sure someone is still alive. so somone has a day of reckoning coming unless he or she dies before the SSA finds out.

Just wondering something about the hospital sheets. Is it possible somebody was caring for her at home and had hospital sheets made specific for a hospital bed?

I know about 15 yrs ago, my hubby's grandmother got sick with cancer, and the family had a medical company come in to the house. They set up everything. The hospital bed along with the hospital sheets for her at-home care.

The only person with doe network listed with a broken back is

Peggy Wynell Byars-Baisden
Missing since April 2, 1965 from Highland City, Polk County, Florida.
Classification: Involuntary

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: July 1, 1941
Age at Time of Disappearance: 23 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'4; 120 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Brown hair; blue eyes
Marks, Scars: Previous broken finger, broken collar bones, broken back, broken right ankle and broken jaw.
DNA: Available
Circumstances of Disappearance
Byars-Baisden left her home in Highland City, FL between 18:00 - 19:00 on April 2, 1965. She was headed to The Chatterbox Bar, which was located where the Polk County Parkway intersects with Highway 98 south near Eaton Park.

Byars-Baisden was driving a 1959 light green two-door Chevrolet coupe with Florida license plates number 5W-21118. A witness observed Byars-Baisden in The Chatterbox Bar's parking lot with an unidentified Caucasian male. Her car was apparently having mechanical problems and the man was assisting her.

Byars-Baisden's vehicle was never found. Her family reported her missing the day after she was seen.
Byars-Baisden was divorced with two children when she disappeared. She worked as a waitress while raising her children. Foul play is suspected.

I'm not sure what the circumstances would have been for it to be her but I think the reconstruction does look like an older version of her.

it seems once I stumbled upon a lady and her son from new mexico, who had a previously broken back, I will try to locate that.

Not finding it, but wil keep looking, seems it might of been in old news articles. I wonder if perhaps the sheets were from a hotel/lodging place. They could be similar.

New Buffalo has a big casino. Not sure if this pertains but I thought I'd throw it in there.

Casino is relatively new, don't recall the exact year it opened but it's been in the last 5 years or so.

here is the one I was thinking of , it wasn't a broken spine, but she had a back injury at the time of her disappearance

Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: December 19, 1955
Age: 35 years old
Height and Weight: 5'0, 145 pounds

Details of Disappearance

Edyth disappeared on February 23, 1991 with her son, Nicholas Vincent Smith. They were living in University Park, the student housing section of New Mexico State University, at the time with Edyth's second husband, Henry Warner, and their young son Andrew. Edyth and Henry were having marital problems in early 1991 and Edyth told Henry she and Smith were going to be staying with a friend temporarily. Smith is Edyth's child from a previous marriage. Henry filed missing persons' reports for his wife and stepson on March 2, 1991, seven days after Edyth and Smith left their residence. Henry had not been able to locate them and neither had been in contact with loved ones since February 23. Edyth and her son have never been seen again.

As for the casino, it was not there! The reason I added perhaps the sheets came from a lodging place or hotel, is because the area is filled with bed and breakfast's, inns, cottages, etc.
There was also a lady named Martha Maxwell who disappeared, who had several injuries from her husband. Her husband (jeffrey a maxwell) looks so dang familiar to me. I worked at the sawyer truck stop around 1989, which is not that far from where this body was found. 6 miles maybe. I have a few girlfriends that worked there about that time, too, I am going to see if they recognize him.........On people finders it shows he has lived in michigan.......

Both of those I posted, the distance is too far. I was thinking Jeff Maxwell might of been a truckdriver, but I didn't find info to support that. :(
I wonder if broken spine, was an injury that would of left her paralyzed or in a wheelchair. Was it clarified if she was currently recovering from a broken spine, or just at sometime in her life, she had broken her spine? I mean that info might not even seem pertinent or be known perhaps if it happened when she was 10. I don't know just going in circles!

I live not far from New Buffalo. There is an exit off of I-94 not far from Red Arrow Highway. Anybody driving from anywhere could have taken this exit and dumped the body. I think one should look at all states, not just the surrounding states. It is possible that someone driving across country dumped the body, and jumped right back on I-94.

You are right it is close.
There is also the Jean Moore case. Her fiance claimed he dropped her off at a casino, to play her favorite game, never to be seen again. Security cameras never saw her there. The fiance's name was Al Henderson. Jean's height/weight is close to uid. Jean went missing in april 1992. Playing around with the last person to see her, I did bring somone up with that name from New buffalo. I am not sure if one and the same. I wish I could get a more complete version of Al's name.......

I was just thinking (I am sure you are all way ahead of me on this) if I-94 to/from Detroit is very near (and it is) could this possibly be a canadian person? Right around Detroit, you can enter from Toronto and other Canadian cities.

nice find ginestra. I seriously doubt the UID is Marie Jost asthe UID was freshly dead and Marie Jost was last seen in the early 1980's.
