MISTRIAL MI - Prosecutor to probe Flint water crisis, Jan 2016

Long Before Helping Flint, Michigan Officials Were Shipping Clean Water to Their Own Workers

According to newly discovered emails, Michigan officials were trucking clean water to a state building in Flint in January 2015, long before they acknowledged to residents that the city had a contamination problem.

One of the emails, which were obtained by the group Progress Michigan, was sent from the state Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. It reads, "While the City of Flint states that corrective actions are not necessary, DTMB is in the process of providing a water cooler on each occupied floor, positioned near the water fountain, so you can choose which water to drink. The coolers will arrive today and will be provided as long as the public water does not meet treatment requirements."

Apparently a similar situation in Ohio with blame being placed on the EPA. Slightly different because in Michigan it was actually the state making decisions in Flint--thanks to the appointment of an Emergency Manager.

However, some, particularly Ohioans may recall that shortly after the current Governor, Kasich, took office, he made headlines for a speech in which he called a state trooper who had given him a ticket an idiot for doing his job.

What many may not recall--or may have never known--was the context of that incident. The Governor had a huge come to Jesus meeting with the state staff of Ohio EPA, just about unprecedented in requiring full attendance of all staff together in one place. The message intended in the trooper story was to imply that enforcing the law is something to be taken lightly. He was urging staffers to push approvals through without requiring needed rewrites or assurances. He was suggesting that the EPA play nice with businesses rather than protecting the enivonment.

Sometime after this, I believe the EPA leadership changed.

Lead Test Results Confirm Worst Fears for Flint Family

by Hannah Rappleye, Adam Rivera and Tracy Connor

Deep down, the Brown family knew the water that had flowed through the pipes in their home in Flint, Michigan — the water that 3-year-old Dana had been drinking for months before anyone was warned — probably contained toxic lead.

This week, they got test results that confirmed their fears.

Water Defense, the anti-fracking and safe-water activist group headed by actor Mark Ruffalo, collected samples from Oscar and Elizabeth Brown's home last weekend and brought them to an independent lab in Cincinnati for analysis...

Hillary Clinton calls Flint water crisis 'immoral'

Chad Livengood, Detroit News Lansing Bureau 8:52 a.m. EST February 8, 2016

Flint — Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton vowed Sunday to help Flint residents recover from a debilitating water contamination crisis during a campaign speech at a predominately African-American church on the city’s northwest side.

“I will not for one minute forget about you or forget about your children,” Clinton told members of the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church during a community meeting that was paired with the church’s morning worship service. “Because what happened here should have never happened anywhere.”

Clinton spoke to a crowd packed into church pews for about 20 minutes but did not make the kind of direct criticism of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder that she has made in presidential debates and media interviews since the city’s lead-tainted water crisis exploded into a national story a month ago...

Snyder calls for investigation of state health dept.

Jonathan Oosting, Detroit News Lansing Bureau 7:13 p.m. EST March 11, 2016

Lansing — Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday called for an investigation into the state health department and its handling of the Flint water contamination crisis, including responses to elevated lead levels and a possible connection to a spike in deadly Legionnaires’ disease cases.

The governor asked Michigan Auditor General Doug Ringler and Inspector General Alan Kimichik of the state Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a joint probe.

“The public health issues the people of Flint and Genesee County are facing warranted an internal review of how the state handled these situations,” Snyder said in a statement. “That preliminary internal review warrants an immediate and thorough investigation. I want some answers.” ...

I'll bet they were told to alter the reports. And I'll also bet that these people were dispensable middle management employees who are always slated to take the fall for the politicians. But this is MOO from longitudinal observation and experience. I'm watching like a hawk.

"The Bell case, however, played an important role in determining the future of the more than five dozen other lawsuits that were filed.

Initially, Bell's case and the others were filed in Genesee Circuit Court. However, they were transferred to U.S. District Court on a motion from one of the defendants, engineering company Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam.

However, Ann Arbor U.S. District Judge John Corbett O'Meara ruled April 13 that Bell's case should return to the state court claiming it lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

Stern said the case will continue and a representative will be appointed for Bell's child.

The ruling also forced the other 63 cases to be returned to state court.

Flint police say they have a person in custody in connection to the slayings of Bell and Reed. No charges have yet been filed."

FLINT, Mich. - President Barack Obama will be visiting Flint on Wednesday, May 4 after an 8-year-old girl reached out to him through email.

Amariyanna "Mari" Copeny, who has been affectionately nicknamed "Little Miss Flint," wrote the President an email back in March explaining her involvement in the city's water crisis recovery.

"I am one of the children that is effected by this water and I've been doing my best to march in protest and to speak out for all the kids that live here in Flint," she wrote...

Governor Rick Snyder declared a few weeks ago that he would drink Flint water for 30 days. That promise was short-lived when he took a recent trip to Europe. Methinks the Governor didn't take Flint water on his trip across the pond. Way to go, Governor Snyder!

Gov. Rick Snyder leaves for Europe on Saturday amid Flint water crisis

Paul Egan, Detroit Free Press Lansing Bureau 6:20 p.m. EDT April 22, 2016

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder is to leave Saturday on a week-long European trade mission, sparking criticism that he should stay in Michigan until Flint's drinking water is again safe to drink.

And Snyder, who on Monday promised to drink filtered tap water at work and at home for the next 30 days won't be bringing his jugs of Flint water with him.

"He pledged to drink it at home and at the office for at least 30 days, total," spokeswoman Anna Heaton said. "Traveling with jugs of water overseas isn’t feasible, but he’ll resume drinking water from Flint upon his return." ...
