MO - Woman with Shotgun Arrested at KMOX, Suspected of Killing Two Kids

Well it appears that her family will be sitting on the defense side IF there is a trial. She has a disability, but that isn't a license to murder your own children. She's lucky this crime didn't happen in Missouri because she would be a good candidate for the death penalty with what she did to those children.

Yokeia Smith: charged with two counts of assault 1st degree & two counts of armed criminal action. Probable cause statement in attached link.

NOTE this is for Missouri charges. She's currently held in St. Clair County IL jail (isolated confinement under suicide watch) with no bond & has been appointed a public defender. In Illinois she faces two counts of first-degree murder. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Oct 11.

She's has had some violations previously; conduct violations, traffic, driving w/o license.

Smith wrote she was hearing voices and seeing things.

"I had been drinking and popped an X-pill. I had got scared and lost it. Everything went black," Smith wrote. "When I came to, I was sitting on the couch with a gun to my head, trying to kill myself."

But Smith didn't kill herself. She drove to St. Louis -- with a gun.

"I was so scared. I ran to St. Louis and hit a white man because I think this was some racist stuff going on," the letter said.
Smith was holding the shotgun when she got out of the car after hitting the man and his 3-year-old son in the Memorial Drive crosswalk in downtown St. Louis. She sat down and waited for police.

Smith, who is currently being held without bail in the St. Clair County Jail, wrote the judge that she is taking medication for bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia.

"I am truly sorry for what happened to my kids," Smith wrote. "I loved them dearly and miss them, too."

There was a gasp from the courtroom gallery Friday as a St. Clair County judge read the charges against Yokeia Smith -- two counts of first-degree murder for shooting her two young children in the head with a shotgun.

Judge ruled that an East St. Louis woman accused of shooting two of her children to death with a shotgun is unfit to stand trial for now. Prosecutors & defense attorneys on Thursday agreed to the report by Dr. Daniel Cuneo that Yokeia Smith could attain fitness within a year given appropriate treatment.

Please note this is the jurisdiction where a man sat in County Jail for 6 years awaiting trial for 1st Degree Murder of his gf's son. He was finally found GUILTY today !

I am curious how long Yokeia will be held before she is tried or released to a mental institution . . .
