MT MT - Ivy Marie Leinen, 11, Poplar, 14 March 2010

Instead of stopping the search entirely, shouldn't they move into recovery mode? Are they just going to wait for her body to turn up? I don't understand... Ivy still needs to be found.

I think it may be because the reports say the river is frozen. If she wasn't found in the open water in the immediate vicinity of where she fell in the water, searching for her under the ice is difficult. I expect they may resume searches once the ice is gone.

How very very sad. Poor child. I sure hope they are able to find her remains soon.

In this part of Montana where she lives, the Missouri twists and cuts back on itself, so that an aerial mile might be a 20 mile ground/river trek. It's not impossible, but the banks are steep, and the ice on the river just makes it prohibitive. If Ivy fell in, she could be anywhere under the ice flow, could be caught up on one of the cut banks...as sad as it is, and horrible to think about, there's just so much you can do until the MO wants to give up Her secrets. It's the reality in the very sparsely populated part of Montana where Ivy's from. There are less than 10,000 people in an area covering more than 2100 square miles. The river frontage in this county alone is incredible, and to go 10 linear miles to go from point A to point B would be going about 40 miles if you walked along the river.

Wow. Yeah. I just pulled up a Google map of the area. That river does wind quite a bit.

I also forgot (somehow) that most of the river was frozen. I guess it's just a waiting game now. Waiting for warmer weather. :( I just have to wonder how far along the river, underneath the ice, she could travel before it unfreezes.

:( So sad for Ivy's family.

In a case like this, would they make neighboring LE aware of the situation and give them a description in case she happens to appear in their jurisdiction?

What I mean is.. maybe some hunter or hiker or fisherman could be moseying along on the river and happen upon her further down the river, if they contacted LE, would LE know that it could possibly be Ivy? Say if they were outside of Richland County or Poplar?

I'd hate to be scrolling through NAMUS in a year and and see her. I hate that they are giving up so early and aren't at least trying something.

The next jurisdiction is in North Dakota. This county goes right to the boundary. Under the ice, the river still flows. There are dozens of little islands, and not so little islands. The ice acts more as a shield to see what's going on in the river. It's just not easy in this area. Their best bet will be flying over but they'd still have to wait for the ice to melt.

It is just a very sad reality. Here in town where I live, we had a very similar situation: Footprints down to the water, none coming back. After 10 hours in the water searching (and they only had about a mile of river to search before the dam) they had to suspend the search due to the ice. Where Ivy is.....Just a lot more twisting and turning and places she could have gotten caught up.

11 year-old Ivy Leinin was reported missing Sunday evening while she was walking her family’s dogs by the Missouri River.

Authorities spent Sunday evening following her track marks and searchers have now determined that Leinin fell into the river and drowned. Investigators have not been able to locate Leinin as yet; unstable ice conditions on the river have not allowed the recovery team to enter the water.

In this area, "as the crow flies" is an official measurement.

This poor little girl. Why did she leave the house to take a walk in 17 degree weather in a short dress and sneakers with no tights or jacket?! I imagine a recovery effort in water covered by ice would be extremely risky and difficult for divers, unfortunately I don't think there's much they can do at this point. All signs point to her falling in the water. It doesn't sound like she should have been out walking alone, that perhaps she didn't know any better than to walk on ice at this time of year when there may be melting/thin patches, much less dressed the way she was.

She wasn't "little" in terms of body size; she was nearly 200 lbs, and 5'7" tall. Montana kids......we just don't do it the same. My granddaughter was wearing shorts this very same day she disappeared and happy to do so....and there's 300 miles (as the crow flies) between us.

If there's no snow on the ground, you probably won't find a pair of winter boots on any kid. We want spring to emerge, we will it by our clothing. It's just how we are.

Going down onto the ice was risky. There had to be a reason, since every kid knows not to do it, but especially rural kids like Ivy, raised right the heck on the river, you don't go on the ice. You're right to wonder why she'd do it. I don't have a good answer.

BILLINGS (AP) — Richland County authorities have called off the search for an 11-year-old girl missing since Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff Brad Baisch says he believes Ivy Leinen fell into the Missouri River and drowned while walking the family dogs near Poplar.

When the dogs returned to the house without the girl, her family started looking for her.

Tracking dogs found Leinen’s tracks across the icy on the river to an island and then to the main channel of the river, ending at an open spot in the ice.

Based on the dogs’ tracks around the water’s edge, Baisch says it appears Leinen fell into the water and the dogs ran back and forth along the edge of the ice unable to help her.

Baisch says the conditions are too dangerous to be on the ice searching for her body.

Poor dear sweet Ivy. :(

They still haven't found Ivy. Meanwhile, a man who fell into the Missouri Jan. 31 was found on Thursday, less than a mile down the river, stuck up next to the dam. Up where Ivy went in are a lot of places a body could be caught up. I hope they find her soon.
