Hatfield's deliberate homicide trial was slated to begin Dec. 3. The new start date is Feb. 17, 2015. It is expected to take at least a week-and-a-half...

After Matt Hatfield, 49, went missing, police looking for him found blood spattered on the walls of the cabin, a stove and a nightstand, documents say.

A breakthrough in the case came in April 2012, when a private laboratory found “a high probability that the skull discovered is that of the parent of Adam Hatfield and that the skull was the donor of the DNA sample from the blood discovered inside the cabin,” court documents say. Later, a state medical examiner determined a large part of the skull was missing and that could be the result of blows from a baseball bat.

All 12 members of the jury had to reach a guilty or not guilty verdict in the this case, but court officials haven't said why the mistrial was declared as of this afternoon.

Under a mistrial, Adam Hatfield remains innocent, but could be charged in this case again at a later date if the county attorney's office decides to do so.

A new trial for a 25-year-old man accused of beating his father to death in 2008 has been set for Sept. 8 in Butte district court.

Judge Kurt Krueger declared a mistrial April 16 for Adam Hatfield after jurors deadlocked on the deliberate homicide charge. The county attorney’s office immediately filed its intention to retry the case.

Prosecutors believe Hatfield killed his 49-year-old father, Matt, and then attempted to burn the baseball bat he used as a weapon and cover up the crime in the small cabin they shared on Roosevelt Drive south of Butte.

Retrial scheduled to begin tomorrow:

In light of recent bomb threats made on the courthouse and in other locations in the Mining City, Krueger on Wednesday ordered the court would comply with a contingency plan created by Butte-Silver Bow police and the county executive during Hatfield's trail. Visitors and employees will be subject to a search. The plan may include prohibiting bags, boxes and other items from entering the courthouse.

The mother of a 25-year-old man on trial for allegedly killing his father in a cabin they shared south of Butte testified Tuesday that he was deceptive and had a penchant for stealing.

The charred baseball bat prosecutors believe Adam Hatfield used in the fatal beating of his father in 2008 was shown to jurors Wednesday in Butte district court.

Wearing black gloves, Detective Lt. George Holland held the alleged weapon found by Butte-Silver Bow County investigators in late December 2008 on the front porch of a cabin south of Butte, where Hatfield, then 18, had lived with his 49-year-old father Matt Hatfield.

In Thursday’s proceedings, Butte-Silver Bow detective George Holland introduced evidence from the cabin south of town. Evidence included flooring, carpeting, and checkbook box, among other miscellaneous blood-splattered items authorities collected from the crime scene.

Adam Hatfield, convicted for the 2008 murder of his father, was sentenced in Butte on Tuesday to life in prison.

Hatfield appeared to handle the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison the same way he handled being found guilty of murdering his father: with indifference.

The 25-year-old showed no emotion when Judge Kurt Krueger sentenced him to life in the Montana State Prison for the 2008 beating death of his 49-year-old father, Matt Hatfield, in a cabin off Roosevelt Drive.
