Raleigh mom fears gang responsible for daughter's disappearance
A Raleigh teen has been missing since Monday, and her mother said she worries that gang members are responsible for her disappearance.

Ashanti Coley-Carter, an eighth-grader at Martin Middle School, hasn't been seen since about 10 p.m. Monday, when she apparently slipped out of her house on Crabtree Boulevard undetected.

So sad. My heart really breaks for this mom. Unlike so many missing teen girls where the circumstances of their disappearance aren't known and being harmed isn't a given, this mom has a VERY scary reason to be concerned for her child's welfare.

How does a 14 year old girl get mixed up with a gang? Was she dating a boy with gang connections? Are her siblings gang affiliated? It is very unusual for gangs to assault "their own", especially a young girl, unless it is payback for something or someone.

I am waiting for members from the area to chime in but living in Raleigh for 17 years,I have never heard of gang activity in this area.

Per the article she was assaulted by a known gang member and was treated at a hospital. If a report was filed, which if she was at a hospital surely one was, then maybe it's a revenge thing. I didn't take it that she was actually in a gang. JMO

There is sadly quite a lot. Anywhere you have minorities, you will have gang activity, though NC has its share of white supremacist gangs as well. Here is some bedtime reading if you're curious :)

Glad she's safe.

Not sure but I guess she might have been named after the singer Ashanti who was very big in the early 2000s. Good old times. Can't believe it's been so long.
