Namus page is down.
Charlotte, SC – The DNA Doe Project and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have confirmed the identity of a man found December 24, 2008, as Jose Espinosa, who had been reported missing in May 2003.

When investigators located the partial skeletal remains in 2008, they estimated that the man had died about three years earlier and that he was Caucasian. Unable to identify him through traditional techniques, the case went cold until they reached out to the DNA Doe Project in 2020 to try investigative genetic genealogy to make an identification. The case required multiple attempts to produce a workable DNA Profile, and shortly after the DNA Doe Project’s team of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists began their research, it became clear that the man’s ancestry pointed to Central America.

Jose Elder Guardado Espinoza, 30, of Charlotte, is now with his Heavenly Father and family.

Elder was born in Esparta, Atlantida, Honduras, on January 18, 1978. He came to Charlotte, NC, and through a mutual friend, met his wife D S J. They bought a home and in 1999, were blessed with a son.

Elder was skilled in construction trades and working with his hands. He used these talents to work as a subcontractor doing drywall and metal framing for many building projects around Charlotte. He was a very dedicated and hard worker who provided for his family, giving him both reward and purpose.

When he was not working, Elder enjoyed shooting pool, listening to music, and spending time with his family and friends. On May 10, 2003, he left his home and was never to return.

On December 24, 2008, human remains were found near the airport in Charlotte. Though it was determined that the person had been the victim of homicide, the identification of the victim was still unknown. After holding out hope for so many years, in 2022, through DNA testing, Elder's remains were positively identified, and now those he loved and left behind begin the process of knowing he is home, both here and with God.

Thinking of Elder's family and friends. Rest in peace. I hope the identification helps drive the investigation towards finding Elder's killer(s).

Elder was last seen May 10, 2003 leaving home in a Oldsmobile Cutless with two unknown people. He was possibly en route to Davidson St.
