In 1933, 43-year-old Agnes Tufverson was a successful New York lawyer with an impressive work ethic, having been named ‘New York’s Most Intelligent Woman’ just one year earlier. In 1930s America, an unwed woman putting her career first was practically unheard of, but Agnes was confident in her life without a man by her side.

While on a solo vacation to Europe in the summer of 1933, Agnes fell in love with Captain Ivan Poderjay and it finally seemed as though she would be able to have both her career and a romance. But just two weeks after her marriage to Poderjay, Agnes suddenly disappeared.

Even with a substantial amount of circumstantial evidence suggesting foul play, police could not bring anyone to justice without proof that a crime had occurred.

Agnes Tufverson has never been found and the mystery has never been solved.

EXAMINE BODY IN SEARCH FOR MISSING WOMAN Kew York, June 15. Special. Search for Miss Agnes C. Tufverson, a woman attorney, who went through a ceremony of marriage with Capt. Ivan Poderjay last Dec. 4 and disappeared sixteen days later, turned tonight to Fordham morgue in the Bronx. For a. time it appeared that the body of a woman taken June 7 from the waters of Old Ferry point was that of the missing woman. When detectives examined the body, however, they decided it was not that of Miss Tufverson. Miss Selma Tufverson, the missing woman's sister, will be taken to the morgue tomorrow to view the body. Meantime an examination by a medical examiner disclosed that the body was S feet 2 inches tall, whereas the missing woman was 5 feet 6 inches tall
