GUILTY NY - Shelby Countermine, 23, Schenectady, 3 Dec 2014

Edward Mero is accused of killing two women: Megan Cunningham and Shelby Countermine.

In January 2013, the body of 23-year-old Megan Cunningham was found in a house on Arcadia Avenue in Albany after a fire. She was Mero's roommate.

The next year, 23-year-old Shelby Countermine went missing in December 2014. A jogger discovered her body in Coeymans the next May. She was found buried in a shallow grave, in an access area controlled by the water department. Mero worked for that department.

Records show he told police he had a sexual relationship with Shelby and last saw her at his house on December 3.

Megan Cunningham was Edward "Ted" Mero's roommate. Shelby Countermine was a woman he paid for sex.

A prosecutor told jurors Monday the former city water employee killed both women nearly 20 months apart in murders shrouded in mystery. Their lifeless bodies were found beyond recognition – Cunningham in a house fire, Countermine in a remote spot in Coeymans.

"These murders were committed in secret," Assistant District Attorney Steven Sharp told jurors in opening statements in Mero's murder trial before Judge Peter Lynch in Albany County Court.

Jurors convicted ex-Albany city water worker Edward "Ted" Mero on Tuesday of murdering two women in mysterious deaths he tried to cover up in a fire and in the remote woods of Coeymans.

The panel of seven women and five men, which began deliberating Thursday afternoon at 3:21 p.m., delivered its verdict to Albany County Judge Peter Lynch shortly after noon: Guilty on all charges.

Mero, 30, faces 50 years to life in prison when sentenced Feb 13 for the murders of Megan Cunningham and Shelby Countermine, both 23.

"I'll never, ever stop missing her, but I'm thankful that finally the man who took her from me in such a brutal horrible, horrific way is in jail," Lori Dean, the mother of Countermine, told the Times Union.

Countermine's mother and stepmother both spoke about Shelby’s love of life and how much they miss her.

"I will always remember my daughter as a beautiful light. I will remember the promise within her and all the dreams that we had for her," said Countermine's mom. "No parent should have their child taken away in such a senseless manner by a monster with apparently no remorse."

Cunningham's mother, Kelly Naylor, wasn’t at the sentencing, so the victim advocate from the District Attorney’s office read her statement.

She addressed the pain of a parent who loses a child. The two had spoken over the phone the night before Mero killed her.

“I told her that I was proud of her, I told her I loved her,” she wrote. “Not everyone is fortunate enough to have their last conversation with a loved one be so joyful.”
