Found Deceased NY - Stevie Bates, 19, Manhattan, 28 April 2012 *found in 2020*

Hi, I’m the cousin of Stevie Bates and would like to briefly say that after scanning this thread, it touches me to know there were many searching eyes, dedicated to uncovering new information and updating our family throughout the years. Because of this outpour of love and care, our family was never alone in this search. With the recent discovery of Stevie’s remains, we would like to properly lay her to rest and fund an in-depth investigation of her attacker. Because of the passage of time and gross inaction of proper officials, there is some difficulty processing a criminal case. However, our family is encouraging those following Stevie’s case to visit www.findsteviebates.com for updates as well as share and donate at
Please Help! Stevie Bates: Devastating Update, organized by Vivian Jones

Again, a huge thank you to the Websleuths community from Stevie’s family.

Had watched this thread years ago, just checked on it and saw this update. Im glad she was found and able to be laid to rest for her family. Sad it was this update though :(

''Skeletal remains found at a New York City construction site two years ago have been positively identified as a 19-year-old "Occupy Wall Street" protester who went in 2012.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is now asking the public for information regarding the death of Stevie Bates, who was reported missing in April 2012. ''

In 2020, during an excavation at 80-97 Cypress Avenue, Bates' skeletal remains were discovered.

New York City’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner positively identified the remains as Bates on Friday. ''

''The NYPD lists her age as 28 and notes that she was homeless.''

Her mother, Vivian Bates-Jones, told ABC Eyewitness News in 2021 that her daughter had later returned to New York and went to visit her boyfriend, who was squatting at a home in Queens.

The home is reportedly close to where the remains were found years later.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). All calls are strictly confidential, police said. ''

So when a young girl who went missing (and police refused to investigate) is identified, NYPD doesn't even announce the missing teenage girl was found murdered, and the murder victim's family has to now? Is this what "policing" is in 2021?
Perhaps the family asked them not to?
