The mother of a 1-year-old Maryland boy found dead inside a backpack in an Ohio creek has asked to withdraw her guilty plea, arguing she suffered from battered woman syndrome.
Stevens filed a motion to withdraw the plea Tuesday, saying domestic violence she suffered in Maryland wasn't properly investigated before she pleaded guilty.
BBM - from the first article ..."In court Friday, prosecutors said that Stevens allowed Flood to beat Beckford with a leather belt and martial arts baton. The 14-month-old lost chunks of skin in the abuse, according to prosecutors."
OMG!!! :tantrum: My heart is just breaking! That poor little angel. I truly hope they get their's in prison...ten fold! :steamed:
RIP Angel :rose: - you are in a much better place.
A Franklin County judge ruled Thursday that a man accused in the beating death of a 14-month-old boy is incompetent to stand trial.
Kurt A. Flood, 25, will be committed to Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare, a state psychiatric hospital on the Hilltop, for treatment aimed at restoring his competency within one year, Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Holbrook ruled.
The child's mother, Dainesha Stevens, 26, told investigators that Flood was trying to beat demons out of the toddler. She pleaded guilty in March 2015 to involuntary manslaughter for permitting the abuse and to tampering with evidence for helping dispose of the boy's body in the East Side creek. She is scheduled for sentencing in June.

Accused child killer found incompetent to stand trial

Under questioning from Assistant Prosecutor James Lowe, Stevens admitted that she didnt protect Cameron from the beatings that began shortly after they moved into Floods Kornwal Drive home, and never told Flood not to hit her children. She, her son and her 6-year-old daughter moved to Columbus from Maryland on Dec. 15, 2014, to escape a difficult relationship with the childrens father. Flood, an old friend, offered to take them in, she said.
Flood quickly grew angry over her sons crying, she said, telling her that Cameron had a demon in him and needed to be punished.
During cross-examination by Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Rausch, Flood continued to deny being the killer, insisting that he got involved after the death to assist his friend.
At the time, Im trying to help this young lady, he said. It seemed like her luck was just bad. So I was like, Well, the only thing we can do now is get rid of the child. Its a horrifying act. Im sure everyone is like, Oh, my God.
The Columbus Dispatch reports a Columbus jury convicted Flood on Thursday of murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.
This week, a jury considered the case against Flood for more than 13 hours, before telling a judge that they had found him guilty on the lesser charges, but were deadlocked on the murder count.
The judge urged them to keep working, and after three more hours, the jury returned guilty on all counts.
Flood faces a mandatory life sentence, with no chance of parole for as many as 19 years, when he is sentenced February 22. Stevens is to be sentenced in June.
Flood was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 19 years. In exchange for Stevens' testimony, the prosecution recommended a maximum 12-year sentence with the possibility of parole after nine years.
