Zunich, who sat handcuffed next to her attorney Charles Grieshammer at the defense table as she pleaded guilty, then awkwardly signed the plea agreement.

She faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison when sentenced on Sept. 29, and Collins can recommend parole in 20, 25 or 30 years or not at all.

Assistant Lake County Prosecutor Jamie Eck told Collins that prosecutors would recommend Zunich be paroled in 30 years. The recommendation is due to Zunich's cooperation, which led to the indictment and conviction of Kevin Knoefel for conspiring with Zunich to kill Lisa Knoefel.

Sabrina Zunich sobbed after being sentenced to 30 years to life for stabbing her foster mother to death...

Lake County Common Pleas Judge Richard L. Collins Jr. said it was difficult not to give Zunich the maximum sentence of life without parole. “The gruesome, shocking, and revolting nature of the crime was among the worst I’ve seen,” he said. “The victim was screaming for help, begging the victim to stop.”

However, Collins said he went with the state’s recommended sentence instead because without Zunich, full justice for Lisa Knoefel could never have been served. “This crime is numbing, but Sabrina’s cooperation was crucial to convict Kevin Knoefel,” Chief Assistant Lake County Prosecutor Karen Kowall said.

The appeal for a Willoughby Hills man convicted of convincing his foster daughter to stab his wife to death will be heard by a panel of judges at the Lake County courthouse Sept. 17.

Kevin Knoefel’s 41-year-old wife, Lisa, was murdered after she had gone to bed for the night on Nov. 16, 2012. The couple’s foster daughter, Sabrina Zunich, now 20, admitted to wielding the knife and claimed she and the victim’s husband were having an affair.
