Lauria Bible’s mother, Lorene, watched as the dive team used a camera to search. After nearly 20 years of searching, Bible said she’s not giving up. But she’s also being cautious with her expectations.

“A lot of times you look and you look and you don’t find anything," she said. "It ends to no avail. So, you don’t put yourself on that rollercoaster. You just want to investigate and see what we find.”

“What’s it going to take, you know? For someone to pick up that phone and call and say, ‘Okay, after almost 20 years,' you know, they can remain anonymous and just tell it and be done," she said.

Competency trial is Friday for murder, kidnapping suspect in Welch girls' case

A jury of three men and three women, along with two alternates, was chosen Friday to decide whether Busick is competent to stand trial in the slayings of Danny and Kathy Freemen and the kidnapping and presumed deaths of their daughter, Ashley, and her best friend, Lauria Bible.

Several jury candidates said they had already formed an opinion and were excused during 4½ hours of questioning to seat the jury.

The competency hearing resumes on Wednesday.

During opening statements, Mosley told the jurors Busick’s legal defense team has tried to get a story from him about what happened on Dec. 30, 1999.
