Found Deceased PA - Barry Glass, 53, Bellwood, 28 May 2016

Take off? Did they quit and not own the rig? My neighbor who drove many years and states ago use to bring his home when not hauling.

Yes, they just decide they are done and off they go. Amazing, isn't it?!

Sorry,I had posted about a different truck and different missing man.deleted post.

I wonder where he was headed to next. Truckers don't pull around an empty truck for very long and are usually headed straight to their pickup right after the unload.

My husband says the semi itself is worth usually more then the load being hauled.

It depends on the load, no doubt. Here in the UK criminal gangs seem to have an uncanny ability to identify high value loads such as electronics, tobacco and booze, expecially spirits, even when carried in unmarked vehicles. Such cargoes are obviously all very easy to get rid of and realise a return on. See these:

In many cases it's believed to be an inside job, ie the gang has someone working at the despatch warehouse who tips them off as to which lorry is hauling the valuable stuff.

strip it down for parts and sale them. Its like chop shops for semis.

I don't know if there's an equivalent industry here. It's possible vehicles are more valuable taken out of the country and sold in Eastern Europe than broken up in the UK.

If he would have pulled over and parked and quit the job surely he would have waited till he was close to home.

Or he could have parked up in a quiet part of a truck stop, abandoned it and hitched a ride with another driver to wherever he decided to go. His truck could go unnoticed and/or unidentified for a long time if left well off his expected route and if camouflaged by other trucks.
