NEW: @GovernorCorbett orders state flags to fly at half-staff at commonwealth facilities at capitol and Pike County in honor of Cpl. Dickson

He leaves behind a wife, Tiffany, and two sons, one in kindergarten and the other in second grade.

Cpl. Dickson had been stationed in Hazleton and near Philadelphia for most of his career as a state trooper before he was finally assigned a post closer to home within the last few months.

Sources told the newspaper that Byron Dickson, who was promoted to corporal this past year, was the victim, according to this report.
Dickson, a Dunmore trooper, is the 95th trooper to be killed in the line of duty since the state police was founded in 1905.

Another LE shooting just happened, in GA. This suspect is in custody.

Two Monroe deputies shot, one critical
The shooting happened on Haley Lane. Bilderback said he was told the deputies were responding to a call of a suicidal person and when they got there they came under fire.

I am about a mile from the Blooming Grove barracks. We got a call last night after it happened telling us to lock up and stay inside. Roadblocks still in place. Some locals think that Dickson was targeted by someone he convicted when he was in Philadelphia. Others think it was someone who just hates the state police in general and knew that they could pull this off because the barracks is in a pretty rural area, but very close to an interstate highway.

[h=1]Manhunt continues in killing of Pa. trooper[/h][h=2]With the deadly ambush on a state police barracks, law enforcement is on high alert in a massive search for the shooter or shooters[/h]
But after scouring dense woods on foot and by helicopter Saturday, authorities suspected the assailant had left the area. They had no one in custody as midnight neared, a state police spokesman said.

"There has been an exhaustive search conducted by hundreds of members of law enforcement," said Lt. Colonel George Bivens. "We have canvassed the wooded areas, neighborhoods. We are convinced this individual is no longer in that immediate area."

"The incident in Blooming Grove shows, once again, that our first responders face constant danger in order that the rest of us may live in peace and safety," Corbett said in a statement.

RIP
Deputy Michael Norris

I don't understand how the shooter was able to get away in such a rural area. Did no other officers hear the shots? Are there no cameras outside of the barracks? Did they use tracking dogs to try to search the area? They seemed to be concentrating on the woods, so I suspect there was no evidence of a get-away vehicle used -- no sound of a vehicle's engine, no vehicle caught on camera and no tire tracks in the vicinity.

Since none of the ambush seems to have been caught on camera, and assuming there are cameras around the barracks, and LE were not able to track the shooter, I'm led to think that he was a marksman who fired from concealment of the woods and escaped through the woods on an ATV.

Surely, someone in the area must have seen/heard something that night and have information to offer leading to the arrest and conviction of the one responsible. Hoping this will be resolved soon without further danger to LE.

Hope no-one objects but I'm going to ask if the two threads we have for this case can be merged, and then moved to Crimes in the News. I don't think there is any question a crime has been committed here....

I agree Z.

Despite the show of force, the ambush remains a mystery. More than 36 hours later officers stopped drivers at a checkpoint on Route 402 and combed the woods near the barracks searching for any trace of evidence from the attack.
