PA - Hitchhiking robot 'hitchBOT' destroyed in Philadelphia

It could have happened anywhere, and good point, what was the little guy doing out there?!

We can tell ourselves that 'it could have happened anywhere...' but is it really any surprise that Bot met with unprovoked violence in one of our violent inner cities? Look at the overall level of needless violence in our urban centers and it is no surprise at all that an idiot would be out walking with a bat in the middle of the night.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy that did this deliberately went looking for it. Some people just have to stomp on anything that makes others happy. I hope if they resurrect this robot whomever is in charge tries to avoid large cities. Sad that is necessary but is is a fact of life in America today.

this will seem really bizarre & I am in NO way implicating him but when I saw that guy destroying HitchBot, I thought 'that looks like Kevin Smith', then I found this:

anyway, I assume filming was over before HitchBot arrived

LadyL, you are one sharp cookie!

"The hitchBOT story just keeps getting weirder. After getting beheaded in Philly this past weekend some people thought he’d be lost forever. But that little hitchhiking robot has popped up again. This time hitchBOT made an appearance in Brooklyn with director Kevin Smith.

Apparently whoever found hitchBOT contacted the Canadian researchers that made him and promised that he’d return the mangled robot. But hitchBOT’s rescuers are reportedly huge fans of Kevin Smith and thought hitchBOT should make a little detour".

O
Wait a minute, what is going on here, the cctv footage of the " beating " is fake?!

Hmm, so hitchBOT really was destroyed but the "footage" is fake?

Either way, not a very funny "joke".

What kind of jerkwad thinks busting up a robot (or a car, or a building, or a mailbox, etc) is an awesome way to spend their time?

Violent. Destructive. Disrespectful. SMDH.

"The Hacktory is trying to decide how to handle the project and plans a public meeting Thursday. Organizers have set up a PayPal account where people can donate to help cover the costs of the repair, and Guthrie said the group is also looking for the donation of a tablet PC, a component of hitchBOT that she suspects was taken when it was vandalized.

Guthrie hopes that, assuming The Hacktory can get hitchBOT’s remains and the creators agree to the repair, putting the robot back together and sending it on its way will help show that Philadelphia’s tech community is “really welcoming, really inclusive, very friendly.”"
Yay! Hitchbot may be resuscitated!

I think they need to redesign it to something more like this. :D
