PA PA - Nicole Bryner, 3, Pittsburgh, 11 March 1982

I haven't heard anything new. I live in Pittsburgh so if I find anything out from the paper or TV I'll let you guys know.

Little Nicole Lynn Bryner has been missing for 29 years. Although a man has been convicted and sentenced to four whole years for killing Nicole, her body has never been found.

The killer, Timothy Widman should be out of prison soon, if he hasn't already been let loose. How many others were there - and how many more will there be?

This year will mark the 30th anniversary of Nichole's disappearance.

I just read on the charley website that this tim scum died last year. anyone know if thats true?

Poor Nicole. She’s still missing after nearly 38 years, her case was closed in 2008, her case remains listed as a non family abduction, her alleged killer received such a short sentence and should’ve served more time. Her poor family:(

Details of Disappearance

Nicole's mother, Melody Thomas Childs, told authorities that her daughter was abducted from a shopping cart on March 9, 1982. Childs claimed that Nicole was sitting inside the cart at a Giant Eagle supermarket store at 23rd Street and Jane Street on the south side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She stated that when she turned around for a moment, Nicole disappeared. A photograph of Childs is posted with this case summary. She and Nicole lived in the 2000 block of Sarah Street.

Authorities were skeptical of Childs's account from the beginning; no one else remembered seeing Nicole in the grocery store at all that day. Several days after Nicole disappeared, a letter was found in her mother's home which was purportedly from Nicole's abductor. The letter stated "Nikky" was dead and buried. Handwriting analysis determined it was probable that Childs herself had written the letter. An extensive search yielded little evidence at the time and Nicole's case became cold.

Timothy Wayne Widman confessed to Nicole's murder four years later in May 1986. A photograph of Widman is posted with this case summary. He was imprisoned on burglary charges at the time of his claims. He had been Childs's boyfriend and lived with her and Nicole in the 2000 block of Sarah Street in 1982, but by the time of his confession he had ended his relationship with Childs.

Widman said that he slapped the child in March 1982 after she bit his toe, and she fell and hit her head. Afterwards, he was unaware she was seriously injured and Childs put her to bed. She was found deceased the following day. Widman claimed that he and Childs put Nicole's naked body in a green plastic garbage bag and buried it in shallow grave in a wooded area along Timberland Road in Brookline, Pennsylvania. They then reported the abduction to cover up Nicole's death.

People who knew the couple reported that Widman regularly abused both Nicole and her mother, and that Childs was fearful of him. She was still married to her first husband, Nicole's father, at the time she was involved with Widman. Nicole's father lived in Texas in 1982 and was quickly ruled out as a suspect in his daughter's case.

A search was conducted in the region for Nicole's remains, but nothing was located. Widman was nevertheless charged with involuntary manslaughter in her case shortly after his confession, but the charges were dropped in 1987. Prosecutors stated that there was not enough evidence against Widman to support any charges; the law at the time dictated that a body had to be found to prove homicide.

Childs, who moved to Garland, Texas and married after Nicole's disappearance, was arrested in June 1986 and charged with felony counts of hindering prosecution and providing false reports to the authorities in connection with her daughter's case. The charges were dropped after Widman refused to testify against her. Childs died in Texas in 2001.

In September 2006, Widman was charged again with criminal homicide in Nicole's presumed death. Investigators did not have any fresh evidence against him, but it is no longer unheard of for homicide cases to be prosecuted without the victim's body being found, so authorities decided to go forward with the case against Widman. He cooperated with the investigation and, in May 2007, admitted to Nicole's murder and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Widman was sentenced to two to four years in prison, with credit for time served. Authorities stated they did not have any evidence to prove intentional murder, as Nicole's body was never located. Widman has apologized to Nicole's surviving relatives. He died in 2011, at the age of 56.

The missing child's report date is listed as March 11, 1982, although Childs claimed Nicole was abducted on March 9.

Her circumstances were modified yesterday but she's been in NamUs since 2010.
She only appeared yesterday. Her case was private until yesterday I believe

Hmm, interesting. You may be right. Trying to think back. I went to NamUs Academy in 2011 and that was back when everybody and their uncle was entering missing persons into NamUs, just copying stuff from DN & CP and even my PA site. And they weren't quite as stringent about validation back then. Could've sworn Nicole was in there but, hey, it was a long time ago and I could be wrong. So I'm glad she visible now. :)

The 1982 disappearance of Pennsylvania toddler Nicole Lynn Bryner

Nicole Lynn Bryner, 3, went missing from Pittsburgh in March 1982. Her mother claimed someone abducted her from a local supermarket, but her boyfriend admitted to killing Nicole years later...

PITTSBURGH — Nicole Lynn Bryner was born on Feb. 20, 1979, to Michael Bryner and Melody Thomas Childs. Her parents were teenagers when they met and married. The couple separated in November 1981 after Childs began an affair with Timothy Wayne Widman, then 21.

Widman’s criminal history dates back to the 1970s, including charges for burglary, forgery, and theft.
Nicole resided with her mother at 2028 Sarah St.

On March 11, 1982, Childs, 22, reported her daughter missing from the Giant Eagle Supermarket at 23rd Street and Jane Street, on Pittsburgh’s south side.

Childs claimed Nicole was sitting on the bottom of the shopping cart. Childs turned briefly to get something from the meat counter, and Nicole was gone when she turned back...

Detectives soon focused on Child's boyfriend, Timothy Wayne Widman, 27, and subjected him and Childs to questioning and polygraph tests, which they passed and were not initially considered suspects...

A few days after Nicole vanished, Childs received a letter allegedly from her daughter’s kidnapper that read, “Nikki was dead and buried.” But handwriting experts found that Childs might have written the letter herself...

There were a few sightings of the toddler after her disappearance.

When Nicole vanished, a pretzel vendor at a stand near the store’s exit reported that he had briefly seen a girl matching Nicole’s description staring at him. The girl had been alone.

An off-duty school guard reported that she saw Nicole walking with an unidentified middle-aged woman away from the store after being reported missing. The woman stood 5-feet-4-inches tall, had dark blonde hair cut just below her ears, and wore a three-quarter-length gray parka jacket. However, police found the woman, and she did not take Nicole.

Another sighting came in March 1985, three years after Nicole’s disappearance. An unidentified man reported to Kern County, California Sherrif’s Department that he saw Nicole at a Bakersfield shopping center accompanied by a male. He had recognized Nicole from her picture on a milk carton. The man went home to recheck the carton before calling the police. The witness was positive that he saw Nicole, who would have been six at the time of the sighting.

The man and child were gone when the police arrived. The witness said the man drove a green 1979 Chrysler with Texas license plates. Authorities never found the vehicle or the man and girl...

In May 1986, Widman confessed to accidentally killing Nicole after a tipster contacted the police, saying they should speak with Widman regarding the young girl’s disappearance.

When questioned, Widman said he had been on a drug binge for several days and was sleeping on the couch at Childs’s apartment when he awoke to Nicole biting his toe. Widman struck the girl in the face, causing her to fall and hit her head on the floor, becoming semi-conscious.

Widman awoke Childs. Unaware of the gravity of Nicole’s injuries, Childs put her daughter to bed. Hours later, they realized Nicole was dead. Widman claimed he and Childs drove Nicole’s body to a wooded area in Brookline and buried it in a green garbage bag.

Widman said it was Childs’ idea to report her daughter missing and say someone had kidnapped Nicole.
Police searched the area where Widman claimed he buried the remains. A cadaver dog indicated a body had been in the area but did not find a body.

Police charged Widman with involuntary manslaughter in Nicole’s presumed death, despite not having any new developments in the case...

... Widman cooperated with the police and admitted in May 2007 to killing Nicole. Police charged him with involuntary manslaughter; he received a two to four-year sentence. The light slap-on-the-wrist punishment upset Nicole’s family, who felt he should have received more time.

Police closed Nicole’s case in 2008 and considered it solved, even though they never found her body.

What a miserable mother, she preferred to save a man than her own daughter and the scum of her boyfriend, garbage. I'm glad they're both dead. I hope they're suffering for what they did to that little baby who wasn't to blame for how her mother was If you can call that irresponsible girl a mother...
rest in peace little baby
