Bill Cosby is charged with sexually assaulting a woman

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Bill Cosby was charged Wednesday with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his home 12 years ago — the first criminal charges brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as America's Dad.

The case sets the stage for perhaps the biggest Hollywood celebrity trial of the mobile-all-the-time era and could send the 78-year-old Cosby to prison in the twilight of his life and barrier-breaking career.

Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault and was to be arraigned in the afternoon...

Montgomery County first assistant district attorney Kevin Steele said that the first-degree felony charge stemmed from a sexual assault that took place in early 2004 in Cosby’s home. Steele said that the victim “came to consider Mr Cosby her mentor and her friend” after the two met through her work at Temple University.

Steele said the victim was penetrated without her consent while she was impaired. “There is not a question in terms of pills being provided to her, there’s not a question as to what went on, of the digital penetration,” Steele said.

(CNN) -- Bill Cosby, charged with aggravated indecent assault in Pennsylvania, will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon, probably around 4 p.m. ET, Montgomery County prosecutor Kevin Steele said. The charge is a second-degree felony, the Montgomery County district attorney's office said after Steele's announcement.

Baldwin woman defends federal defamation suit against Bill Cosby
“He [Cosby] indicates that the statements made were opinions, and as opinions are protected from any legal consequences,” Ms. Hill’s lawyers said. “This reasoning allows him to lie about anyone who truthfully accuses him of misconduct.”

So it's actually a second degree felony that Cosby is charged with, not the first degree felony that was stated in the press conference. They're already screwing up.

I never thought he'd actually be charged- at this point I don't care wether its first or second degree- I'm just glad he's charged. Hopefully, much more will come to light because of this one charge- legal and irrefutable. MOO

I agree Frigga. I was just pointing out how they made a mistake right off the bat with a basic fact during the PC. Steele kept repeating "first degree felony." How could they get that wrong in a prepared statement?!

Oh, gotcha! Now I understand. Such shoddy reporting these days, thanks for the clarification.

Did you think he would ever be charged for anything?

Well, actually the misinformation came directly from the DA.

No, I didn't think Cosby would be charged, so this is a pleasant surprise! At least we will no longer read that Cosby "has never been charged with a crime" !!

CNN: Gloria Allred, who represents several of Cosby's accusers, commented on today's charges. GA is from Pennsylvania and said she is pleased that Cosby has been charged in at least one of the alleged rape cases.
