Ross is understood to have been in the Fort Tilden area in the Queens borough of New York City during the first weekend of November.
A renowned Irish photographer and filmmaker has been reported missing in New York by his family, after his bike was found locked at a beach stand days after he was last seen.
Howth native Ross McDonnell (44) was last seen on Saturday, November 4.
Ross is understood to have been in the Fort Tilden area in the Queens borough of New York City late that Saturday night (November 4) or early that Sunday morning.
His bike was discovered locked at Fort Tilden beach on Tuesday, November 7.
Fort Tilden is a national recreation area located at a former US Army base. It’s situated on a peninsula in the Queens borough of New York City, just south of Coney Island and west of Long Beach.

Gene Gallerano, a close friend of Mr McDonnell, said it is believed he had been on the beach and “went out into the ocean” but had not been seen since.
“He was last seen last Saturday night, the alarm was sounded on Sunday, we don’t know much more than that,” he said. Mr Gallerano said.
Search efforts are seeking to locate a black backpack Mr McDonnell had with him at the time “for clues to his disappearance”, the missing person notice states.

”CCTV is believed to have captured Mr McDonnell on his bike on Sunday. He missed an appointment that evening and, after failing to turn up for work the following day, friends went to his apartment and broke down the door.

Family members then travelled from Ireland. The discovery of the bike at Fort Tilden beach on Tuesday focussed police attention on that area and a search was carried out, including of the nearby waters.”

The circumstances don’t sound good at all :(

Wonder why he we go into the ocean in mid November, if that is accurate. It's not winter weather here, but it's not swimming weather either.

I got in the water with a surfer friend at Rockaway Beach in June one year and had to use a wetsuit. The only people I know who spend significant amounts of time in the water around Fort Tilden are surfers, and most of them use wetsuits year round.

Sorry no, he isn't, those are just the people who I know who spend time in the water up there. I have edited my post for clarity.
Don't be sorry - I should've figured it out. I mean, it's unlikely he arrived on bicycle with a surfboard! :) I wasn't thinking it through. We got it straightened out. ;)

Worried about the guy.

An investigation has been launched after a headless body was discovered on a beach in the Rockaways in New York City.

The NYPD were on the scene at Breezy Point Beach just after noon on Friday after reports of human torso came in to 911.

Officers with the 100th Precinct responded to the gruesome sight which saw a human torso with legs still attached but without arms, was found lying on the sand.

*******
The identity of the body found on Friday will not be released until the family is notified.

The NYPD has not revealed whether the body had washed up on shore or been dumped on the beach.

Oh no.

(I always feel for the people who find bodies unexpectedly.)

From the article… personally I think there is a little more to his story that is being told. JMO

cops think McDonnell — a 44-year-old Emmy winner whose bike was found locked up at Fort Tilden Beach on Nov. 7 — may have drowned in the churning waters, then had his body ravaged by some natural phenomena before it washed up on Breezy Point Beach Friday, sources said.

Investigators have been seeking to track down McDonnell’s
red puffy North Face vest,
black and white sneakers,
dark-colored khaki pants and
black North Face backpack as they searched for clues about his disappearance.

Yes, 100% this. Decomposition, scavenging, etc can quickly disarticulate body parts in the water. It's pretty clear that Ross drowned.

''According to his website, McDonnell won an Emmy award for cinematography on the Showtime series The Trade in 2019.
In 2019, McDonnell was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Photography award in its cycle 'Hope.' His work was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.''

''McDonnell's debut feature film Colony premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam's first feature award in addition to an Irish Film and Television Award nomination.

The Shala Yoga studio in Brooklyn said McDonnell was a member in a November 16 Facebook post.

"The Shala is deeply saddened by the news that a beloved student, Ross McDonnell, has been missing since early November," the post said.''

"We know Ross as a kind, sensitive, and loving member of our community. We are thinking about his sincerity and dedication to his yoga practice. Our love and prayers go to Ross, his family, and friends."

Set in the distant future, a female astronaut, shipwrecked on the long-decimated Earth, must decide the fate of the wasteland's remaining populace.

The dismembered body of an Emmy-winning filmmaker who disappeared this month was found at a New York beach.

While it has not been officially identified, law enforcement sources told NBC News that the remains appear to be Ross McDonnell's.

The 44-year-old Irish filmmaker was last seen on 4 November leaving his apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on a bicycle.

His bike was later found locked at Fort Tilden Beach in Queens, located on the Rockaway Peninsula next to Breezy Point.

New York Police officers responded to a call on Friday, just before 12.30pm, over reports of a human torso with legs found lying in the sand.

No foul play is suspected and there is no indication McDonnell took his own life, the sources told NBC.

They added that it is possible McDonnell went for a swim, somehow got caught in the current and drowned.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are working with the Irish consulate and awaiting DNA testing results.

If some natural phenomena caused a decapitation and limb removal, then would we have not heard about this in other cases?
It's the same phenomenon by which lots of feet in tennis shoes wash up on beaches in the PNW.

This article specifically explains why feet disarticulate easily, but add large ocean predators and a body can be broken down quickly at sea.

There have been lots of shark sightings and an attack this summer at NY beaches:
