Family Seeks Justice In Cold Case Killing Of Downriver Tattoo Artist In Detroit
Dec 20 2018
DETROIT (WWJ)
- Seven years ago this week, a Downriver tattoo artist and dad was murdered in Detroit. Today, his family won't give up hope that justice may yet be found.

Wyandotte resident Scott Groat, 30, died early in the morning of December 18, 2011.

Reports say Groat and a friend attended a private party at MGM Grand Detroit; and at around 3 a.m. Groat was walking in the area of Grand River and Bagley, about three blocks from the casino, when he encountered his killers.

There was a confrontation, according to authorities, and the suspects -- a group of maybe three unknown men -- stabbed Groat multiple times in the neck."
"Groat's friend was able to get him to the car. He called 911 and was directed by a dispatcher to a local hospital, but Groat died before they could get there."

“His last words were ‘Please don’t let me die'," a family member said.

Groat left behind a 1-year-old daughter, and a grieving mother, Mary Groat, who believes someone out there knows who ended her son's life so brutally.

"An innocent trip before Christmas to a Detroit casino turned deadly and now the family of a murdered Wyandotte man is asking for the public’s help to find his killer.

Scott Groat, 30, a tattoo artist, was killed December 17. Reports indicate Groat and a friend went to MGM Grand Detroit Casino for a party, and at about midnight, Groat was walking at Grand River and Bagley, three blocks from the casino."

“Someone had to have seen this brutal act of violence occur … Please help put these killers behind bars,” the family member said.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. A reward is being offered for the arrest and conviction of a suspect"

One of his classmates reached out to me about his case.

I don't think there is enough available for an episode, but I'm trying to get his name and face out there.

"There was an uncorroborated report that someone was getting harassed and Mr. Groat stepped in to intervene in that harassment," Kimble told reporters Thursday. "And that's what led to the first verbal altercation between him and this group individuals."

Groat's mother, Mary Groat, said that her son was just that kind of guy.''
