Southwest States - AZ, CA, CO, NM, OK, TX, AR, LA, UT, NV - Weather Discussion

I was in a city once that had a severe dust storm, though it wasn't a haboob like the one in Phoenix. People were walking around wearing ski goggles and scarves (it was April in a city with a warm climate). I was leaving town that day and I remember I could feel dust particles crunching in my mouth, even after multiple efforts to rinse. Yuck.

I'm so sorry Okiegranny. When my nephew lived in texas he had a few earthquakes, one caused some cracks up the wall. He was convinced they were also due to fracking.

That's what I'm worried about. How much shaking can our houses take before they start coming apart? Nothing is built to withstand earthquakes around here.

http://bakken.com/news/id/228532/oklahoma-earthquakes-usgs-continues-look-increase/

There have been more than 500 magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes in Oklahoma this year, up significantly from 109 in 2013 and just 35 in 2012, according to U.S. Geological Survey officials.

As of Monday, there had been 539 of the higher magnitude quakes in 2014, with 19 being magnitude 4.0 or greater.

LOL, did we get tired of talking about the weather?

Posting a link for those in N. Texas who have TXU electricity. Oncor is the repair division. This shows the reported outages/ repairs in progress in the TXU service area. Site can be accessed by smartphone during a power outage. We've had small tornadoes all around tonight, but nothing direct, obviously. Hope all are safe.

Looks like Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas will and have gotten a pounding.

I have a sister in Houston and another relative near Austin. It is bad there right now. Here in North Louisiana, we are under a strong thunderstorm warning as well as a tornado warning until 2am. I am already hearing thunder out there. There was quite a bit of downed tree damage and roofs blown of when it blew through Shreveport.

I live on a large wooded lot with trees both front and back. We always have downed branches. There went my Direct TV satellite. I don't mind saying I am absolutely terrified of bad weather. The wind and heavy rain have now started. It will blow on over to Mississippi or up to Arkansas from here.

I have lots of candles lit all over. I have depleted my basic candle supply and forgot to get more, so here goes my scented ones! I hope the electricity doesn't go out. Living alone is not all it's cracked up to be! Sure, I can eat crackers in bed and have full control of the remote, but I'd rather not be alone.

Hope all of you out there are not getting this pounding! Take care!

63,000 Houstonians are without power.

Our tornado watch has now been extended to 5am here in North Louisiana. No sleep for me tonight.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
800 PM EDT SUN JUN 14 2015

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Data from an Air Force Reserve Unit Hurricane Hunter aircraft
indicate that a broad area of low pressure has formed in association
with the surface trough and upper-level low over the south-central
Gulf of Mexico. However, the low's circulation is not well-defined,
and the current shower and thunderstorm activity remains somewhat
disorganized. The aircraft also found a large area of tropical
storm force winds well to the north and northeast of the low.
Upper-level winds are forecast to gradually become more favorable
while this system moves northwestward during the next couple of days
across the western Gulf of Mexico, and a tropical depression or
tropical storm could form during that time. Another Hurricane
Hunter aircraft will investigate this system Monday morning.

Interests in and along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico should
monitor the progress of this system. Regardless of tropical cyclone
formation, tropical storm conditions are possible along portions of
the middle and upper Texas coast and the western Louisiana coast
Monday night and Tuesday. There is also a risk of heavy rainfall
and possible flooding across portions of eastern Texas and western
Louisiana. For additional information, please see High Seas
Forecasts and products issued by your local National Weather Service
forecast office.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...80 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...80 percent

No one needs another drop of rain but apparently Mother Nature knows better than us. I guess long term , for a dry region like Texas, this is a good thing.

Hi Peliman, thanks for the heads up. I had no idea anything was brewing in the Gulf.

yuppers, got my eye on this.

darling husband and I, only 25 minutes inland from the Galveston beach.

we spent time yesterday getting prepared in case of the worst.
ready to bring our chickens, 4 red hens in the garage if need be, all gassed up, pulled cash out atm's, groceries..

luckily, we have a natural gas gen outside that will kick on within 30 seconds of lost power, enough to power 2 story home..

we learned our lesson w/ hurricane Ike..

hurricane season seems to be getting a early start this yr...

time to bat down the hatches so to speak and hunker down..

flooding scares me more than the winds...

BREAKING: Officials have called for a voluntary evacuation on Bolivar Peninsula ahead of the tropical disturbance expected to move in off the Gulf overnight.

Just checking in here. I am in Houston so gonna get all the rain and possible flooding. We DONT NEED IT. Ground is so saturated that when it rained for about 20 mins yesterday there were standing puddles and little rivers running through the yard. I also live about 5 mins from a huge reservoir that is know to flood over the roads. Going to run to the store to grab a bottle of wine so I should be set.
