In 1996, about the time the powerwurks.com website was created, multiple posts were made to various Usenet newsgroups by a John Karr. In one post Karr described himself as a 31 year old with 3 young children, and that he planned to attend college and major in elementary education. One post purported to be from a 23-year-old woman named Lara, which coincided in both name and age to Karr's then-wife Lara. The posts were made to newsgroups dedicated to topics like "parents-teens", "personals", and groups frequented by students from elementary through high school. The posts contained references to the powerwurks.com website, and some described the purpose of the site.

1996 - March 9 - Karr accessed the alt.support.loneliness newsgroup talking about powerwurks.com

1996--August–September 1996: Karr served as a substitute teacher at Hamilton Elementary School. In September 1996, Karr was fired from a substitute teaching job in Alabama after parents complained about his classroom etiquette. "Things he would say in my opinion were not needed to be said in a classroom of elementary students," said Marion County School Superintendent Bravell Jackson.

1996 fall, John Mark Karr begins attending Bevill State Community College, in Hamilton, Alabama

During that time he also ran a used car business, according to Marion County Probate Judge Annette Bozeman, who often saw Karr in her office working on car titles

1996 - Gary Williams, assistant superintendent of Alabama's Franklin County School System, confirmed to TIME that John Mark Karr worked as a substitute teacher there on December 17, 18 and 19, of 1996.. He continued as a substitute teacher until May of 1997. While there, the elementary-school principal reprimanded Karr for behaving inappropriately with students. "She suspected some things and confronted him," said Williams. "He made corrections."

1996 – family Christmas in Atlanta

1997 – summer - John Mark Karr opens daycare center

2000 - March, Karr's mother died in a rest home in PA

2000 – summer, John Mark Karr moves family to Petaluma, CA

2000 - December, through March 2001, he worked in the Petaluma, Old Adobe, Liberty and Wilmar elementary districts as a substitute school teacher.

2001 – early in year, John Mark Karr contacts Wendy Hutchens re: Richard Allan Davis

2001 – April, John Mark Karr is arrested, jailed, on five counts of child *advertiser censored*

2001 – April, wife Lara files for divorce.two days after JMK's arrest

2001 – October, Karr is released from jail with restrictions

2001 – November, wife Lara files restraining order, divorce is finalized

2001 – December, John Mark Karr disappears, fails to show for January, 2002 court case

2002 – summer - in Paris, John Mark Karr meets Mike Sandrock, Boulder, CO journalist

2002 – summer - John Mark Karr begins emails with Michael Tracey, professor, journalist

2004 – Karr in Costa Rica teaching English

That piece of work experience is tellingly missing from Karr's resume. So is his experience at the Southwest School in La Esperanza, Honduras (though his tenure at another La Esperanza school gets prominent mention). Southwest's director, Caridad Pineda Ponce, recalled that John Karr lasted at her school barely a week before he was fired in 2004. He was canned, she said, for not working within the rules and guidelines of the school.

That currently embarrassed administrator is Banchong Chompowong, assistant director of the English immersion program at Bangkok Christian College, where 100 expatriate teachers see to the education of more than 5,000 boys. Karr worked at the school for two weeks in June as a first-grade English teacher. He seemed both polite and articulate, says Chompowong, but was fired at the end of his two-week trial for being a tad too strict.

This wasn't Karr's first shot at teaching Thai kids. Saint Joseph's Convent, an elite elementary and high school a short drive from the Christian college — where parents who drive late-model BMWs shell out $7,400 a semester to get their daughters educated — had hired Karr for a two- or three- week trial period earlier this year as a grade-school English teacher. "We were just seeing if he passed our standards," a senior school official who declined to be identified told TIME. "He didn't, so I fired him." She recalled that officials at Bangkok Christian College had called earlier this year to follow up on a reference Karr had given them. She said she told them that Karr hadn't passed muster.

Nobody has suggested yet that Karr behaved inappropriately with his students in Thailand.

2006 – August – Thailand - Karr is arrested for the murder of Jon Benet.
Thank you so much for starting this. I was working on one last night from many sources so please take any of the information I found which you feel is important and add them in; and if there is disagreement among sources, or unverified, you could add a note to that effect. You will note some discrepancies because there are different explanations of dates for his mother's presence in his life. The sources of all this were newspaper stories, and interviews to the media by his relatives and family spokesman.
----------------------------------------------------------------

US public records index has a record (undated) for John Karr's one time residence:
John M Karr age 42 b 1964
Lara M Karr
2004 Chetwood Dr
Petaluma, Sonoma, Ca 94952
-----
from psych. profile on Wendy Hutchens' site (she was a police informant whom John gave this information to so some of it may be inaccurate):
John was born in Atlanta Georgia
moved to Hamilton Alabama age 5 (1969)
one older brother Michael and one younger half brother Nate who did not live with him as a child.
John's mother died when he was 14, i.e. 1978 (news reports say 2000).
In 2001, his brothers still lived in town where they were raised i.e. Alabama

The following are from newspaper sources primarily Atlanta Journal Constitution:
John's mother was Patricia Elaine Adcock
she was a travelling evangelist from Lovejoy, Ga, when she
married Wexford Karr on Aug 21, 1958. He was 37 and she was 18.i.e she was born about 1940/he was born in 1921.
They had two chidren, Michael, 47 this month and John, 41. So Michael was born Aug 1959.

John Mark Karr was b. Dec 12, 1964 (other sources say Dec 11)
Nathan S. Karr was born 1971. He is a half brother, so his mother must be Wexford's second wife Susan. Yet Wexford was still married to Patricia in 1971, though she was probably in the mental asylum at that time; he divorced Patricia in 1973. What happened to her after being committed is unknown and should be researched.

Wexford and Patricia separated in 1969. One source says he had tried to kill John as an infant by putting him in the center of a doughnut of kindling and lighting it; his brother rescued him; that this happened before he was one year old, she was either immediately or later committed to Central State Hospital. Wexford filed for div. 1973 in Clayton County.(reported in Atlanta Journal Constitution). Other sources say she was committed immediately after the attack which would mean John was 4 or 5 years old.

Denver Post says the mother laid out a blanket on the living room floor, set a guitar and bible on it and asked the boys to lie down. She then told them she would light the blanket and them on fire. Michael grabbed his brother's hand and took him to a neighbour. John was 4 at the time, and he and Michael went to Hamilton, Ala. to live with his paternal grandparents. Patricia was committed to Georgia State Hospital in Milledgeville, according to several reports (In 1837-42 the Georgia Lunatic Asylum, aka State Asylum for the Insane, Milledgeville State Hospital, now Central State Hospital (its name since 1967) was developed - source:Georgia Encyclopedia). Attorney speaking for Michael Karr, Gary Harris says John Karr has virtually no recollection of his mother. This is contradicted by John's psych profile where he says he was molested by his mother from birth to age 9 and she died when he was 14. In the profile he claims she molested him and was molested herself as a child, which caused his confusion all his life about his sexuality and his attraction to children.

At the time of the murder attempt the Karrs were living in an Atlanta apt. complex that Wexford owned. One of the tenants was Susan Simpson. He married her after Patricia was committed.
The boys were in his custody. Patricia received a $5,000 mobile home and $125 /m. alimony (source court papers; reported at ajc.com). It would be interesting to know if she lived in the mobile home after discharge from mental hospital or whether she remained in hospital the rest of her life.

Wexford remarried, age 52 (1973, right after divorce from Patricia) to Susan Simpson, 23 yrs younger., age 29. Marriage lasted 6 mos. (some sources say 9 months); divorced.

Wexford began career in construction industry in 1965. Son of a deacon from Hamilton, Ala., Wexford Karr moved to Atlanta Ga. after WW II and began construction and real estate business and active in his church. Still actively doing hard labor, climbing on roofs etc. in his 70s and up to the present.
Source: friend George McCrary, 76. Has known Wexford for 40 yrs.and worked with him in construction.

McCrary reported that Patricia tried to kill John when he was a baby. Michael, his older brother, saved him.
He related how Patricia was committed to a mental institution, now deceased. The accounts of her death vary.
One news report said his mother died in 2000 in car crash. However John's psych. profile says she died when he was 14, or 1978, of unnatural causes and that he might even have killed her.
We have no info yet on her treament or length of stay at the mental hospital. It is not clear whether John never saw her again after she was taken away, though the age at which this happened varies from age 4 to age 14.

One news report and several family interviewes said that John Mark Karr moved to Alabama to live with his paternal grandparents when he was about 12. His grandfather was a deacon at the church. John grew up in Hamilton, pop. 7,000, graduated h.s. there. 1982.

John attended one semester at Riverwood HS in Sandy Springs, Atlanta, from Jan to May 81, and lived there some years after graduating in Alabama.
In 1984 in Ala. married Quientana Shotts, born about 1970. He was 19 and she was 13 or 14. Annulled Mar 1985 9 mos later.

John married pregnant Lara Marie Knutson, 16, in May 1989. He was 24. Married at Gwinnett County courthouse in Lawrenceville.
2 infant twin girls named Angel and Innocence either died at birth or miscarried.
3 living sons. One source says the family moved to California where the 3 sons were born. John Mark II, Seven Exodus, and Damon.

Other facts known in brief:
Wexford Karr had a used auto dealership. This is where John obtained his fancy cars such as the Delorean and the Porsche which he considered "chick magnets" as a teenager. Wexford owned several houses and apartment complexes including some that were rented out.
John helped in his dad's construction business.
Note religious influences (evangelical protestant Christianity) on both sides of the family. John's mother and father were both involved in the church and so was his father's father.
John reportedly became a Catholic when working at a Catholic girls school before or around 2001.

kazzbar said:
Yes, Angel and Innocence> Kinda odd names really. But then again one of Karr's sons is Seven.
I read somewhere that JMK named his child "Seven" because that is his favorite age for little girls. What a sick, perverted, twisted SOB.

I read where the name was 'Seven Exodus'. Right wrong?
I think that is correct, LaMer. What a name, eh?

Karr evidently told Quientana to lie about her age, and took her out of Alabama, where they both lived, to marry her. Karr and Shotts lived together as a couple in Hamilton after their wedding, and Karr "was abusing her every way there was," according to Melissa Shotts.[15] Court records show that, in 1985, a 14-year-old girl sought an annulment of what the records call a "ceremonial marriage," saying she had feared for her life when she agreed to marry Karr in 1984. Karr admitted to the court that she was a minor, but disputed she had been 13. The marriage was annulled in 1985

The Marion County Department of Human Resources issued a license for Karr to begin operating a day care out of his home in June 1997. Under the license, Karr was allowed to care for as many as six children at a time, ranging in age up to 14 years old.

2000 - March, Karr's mother died in a rest home in PA

2000 – summer, John Mark Karr moves family to Petaluma, CA---John Mark Karr raised the hackles of his wife at the time and three sons when he diverted to Boulder and dumped them in a motel for the day so he could troll around town doing "research" for a book on the JonBenet Ramsey murder, says a member of Karr's church in California.
"He got a feel for the place and observed it all for his book," Dennis Melfa, 59, said Sunday as he recalled what Karr told him five years ago.

That daylong excursion could have given Karr the knowledge he professes to have about the Ramsey home and local landmarks.

2000 - John Karr received a bachelor of science degree in liberal arts from Regents College, now Excelsior College, in 2000, spokesman Bill Stewart said Thursday.

2000 - After settling in Petaluma, CA a few weeks later JMK met Dennis Melfa, 59, attending Rite of Christian Initiation classes at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. Melfa was a real estate broker, and JMK asked Melfa about buying the house where Polly Klaas had been kidnapped.

The way Karr presented himself impressed the group, the San Francisco Cable Car Chorus, as much as his voice. "He was the kind of guy who was always, like, on a performance, so they loved him," Melfa said.--->>

Karr drove a Jaguar, Melfa said, a fairly new model, and dressed "like he had money." However, court records of the Karrs' 2001 divorce show his wife brought in the bulk of the family's earnings.--->>

Melfa visited (JMK in jail) twice, once bringing novels to Karr.

"I wanted to try and figure out whether he was guilty or not, and I couldn't really tell," Melfa said. He recalled that Karr "was frightened" and insistent that he had been set up by Hutchens because he had been pressuring her to put him in touch with Davis.--->>

After Karr was released from jail in October, he began attending the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. Vincent De Paul's. He hitchhiked or took a bus from Santa Rosa where he had arranged to trade labor for rent, Melfa said.

Karr stayed at the Bennett Valley home of Herb Willsmore, 60. Willsmore said a friend at the church had referred Karr to him.

"He crawled under the house and put in a water line; it was pretty good work," said Willsmore, who is disabled. "He was always wanting to talk.--->>

At dinner, Melfa said, Karr also said he was thinking about starting a church in San Francisco fashioned after "one those those Jim Bakker, great big revival type things."

"He figured with all those homeless, and all those lost souls in San Francisco, that he could lead them and really become something big doing that," Melfa said

2001 – November: A judge issues a restraining order, compelling Karr to stay 100 yards away from his wife and three children for three years. Divorce is finalized.

2001 – December: A warrant was issued for Karr's arrest after authorities said he violated the terms of his supervised release.

2002 - April: California Commission on Teacher Credentialing suspended Karr's certification. No specific reason was given, but automatic suspensions are authorized when a complaint, information or indictment is filed in court alleging the teacher has committed an offense specified in the Education Code.

2002 – summer - in Paris, John Mark Karr meets Mike Sandrock, Boulder, CO journalist

2002 – summer - John Mark Karr begins emails with Michael Tracey, professor, journalist

2004 – Karr in Costa Rica teaching English

2004 - Aug. 3: John Karr left Costa Rica, crossing the border into Nicaragua by land. Costa Rican authorities say they have no record of him entering the country and no other evidence of his stay

Nobody has suggested yet that Karr behaved inappropriately with his students in Thailand.

2006 - May - Tracey and Karr exchanged hundreds of e-mails during a four-year span, the content of which gave rise to Tracey's suspicions about Karr's potential involvement in the JonBenét murder.[39] Tracey eventually revealed his concerns to investigators working the case privately. They, in turn, provided the emails to prosecutors at the Boulder District Attorney's Office[39] sometime in May 2006.

2006 – August – Thailand - Karr is arrested for the murder of Jon Benet.

From the Washington Post Aug 23/06
On Tuesday, another relative shed light on a history of mental illness in his family. Karr's mother, Patricia Elaine Karr, who is deceased, was hospitalized at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Ga., and later lived in a group home, according to her stepmother, Shirley Adcock.
Adcock, 70, of McDonough, Ga., said in an interview that Patricia Karr suffered from "flashbacks." At times, she refused to eat, and she would tell her father, "Daddy, I'm dead, and the boys are dead." Adcock said that her stepdaughter loved her sons but that they went to live with their paternal grandparents in Alabama when their parents divorced because Patricia Karr was not well enough to take care of them.

So this guy Melfa....recalled that Karr "was frightened" and insistent that he had been set up by Hutchens because he had been pressuring her to put him in touch with Davis.

Hello, that's exactly what I said before. This *could* have been his defense had he not fled. Hutchens sent him those child *advertiser censored* pictures IMO.

Has there been any evidence that Karr ever acted on any of his crazy pedo-fantasies that he writes about?

You might also want to include in the timeline that in 2001, Sonoma County gave the info on Karr (including his name and current address) to Boulder authorities. Had Mary Lacy taken the files from the Boulder PD at that point? What did she do with the information?

Also, JMK meets Sandrock in 2002. Can we assume that Karr gave him his name at that point? Surely he didn't say "Hey, I'm December25,1996" as an introduction. Can we safely assume that Sandrock, in passing Karr onto Tracey, also told Tracey Karr's name? So, when the authorities say they just found out Karr's name a few days prior to the arrest, could that be BS?

Hello,

I have been a lurker on this for for several years and I
am one of those who do not know what to think about JMK

It has been said that he was a used car saleman in 1996. Is
there anyway to know if he bought wholesale and had to transport
autos. This could have given him a reason to be out of town alot.

Just a thought
