Defense grills L.A. County coroner in 'Grim Sleeper' trial

On Wednesday, guided by Silverman through decades-old documents, Fajardo testified that seven of the victims died from gunshot wounds to the chest, one was strangled and another suffered both strangulation and gunshot wounds.

Fajardo also testified that the trajectory of the bullets was consistent with the victims sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle while their assailant sat in the driver's seat. That is the method Silverman has alleged Franklin used in the killings.

Bleeding in his car, L.A. woman told alleged Grim Sleeper serial killer, ‘If I die I am going to haunt you,’ court hears

Then one night in November 1988, police said, he drove down a Los Angeles street in his orange Ford Pinto, spotted Enietra Washington and offered her a ride.

She first declined.

Franklin pushed harder.

“That’s what’s wrong with you black women?” she said he told her, according to People magazine. “People can’t be nice to you."

(...)

So she took a chance and got into the car of the suspect who came to be known as the “Grim Sleeper.”

Washington, now 57, testified Thursday in a Los Angeles court about the night she alleged Franklin shot her, sexually assaulted her and snapped a photo of her before he pushed her out of the Pinto and left her to die.

(...)

Among the alleged victims, Washington is believed to be the sole survivor.

In November 1988, Washington was on her way to a friend’s house when she accepted the ride.

Washington said in court Thursday that Franklin told her he needed to stop by his uncle’s house to get some money. After that, she testified, he started acting strange, saying Washington was “dogging him out.”

Washington said she called her by another woman’s name.

She said he started muttering.

Then, she recalled, things got “eerily quiet.”

Then, she said, she noticed blood leaking from her chest.

“You shot me?” she remembered saying, according to the Los Angeles Times. “I asked him, ‘Why?'”

Washington, at the time a 30-year-old mother with two children, said she was trying to stay conscious and knew she needed help.

“I kept wanting to know why he shot me,” she said, according to People. “I said, ‘You need to take me to the hospital.’ He said he can’t do that.

“I said, ‘If I die I am going to haunt you. You are going to have to take care of my kids.'”

Franklin’s defense attorney, Seymour Amster, has sought to discredit the DNA evidence, which looms as crucial to the prosecution's case.

He resumed that tack while questioning Gonzalez, presenting a series of hypothetical situations suggesting that the procedures and policies used to conduct the DNA analyses could have been faulty.

It's just a very strange coincidence that the mistaken DNA evidence in every case happened to point to the same man who had pictures and personal items of the victims quite innocently in his fridge.

Exactly... Not a very convincing defense, is it!

Missing Woman Was Found in Accused Serial Killer’s Stash of Photos
Regina Morris’s sister had been missing for four years before she saw her again—in a photo taken from the home of an accused serial killer.

In 2009, LAPD homicide detectives showed her one of the hundreds of Polaroids from Lonnie Franklin Jr.’s home in South Los Angeles. Police arrested him on July 7, 2010, accusing him of murdering 10 people and attempting to murder of one survivor.

“The picture they showed me was my sister RoRo,” Morris told The Daily Beast, referring to the nickname she used for her older sister, Rolenia Morris, who was 29 when she disappeared on Sept. 10, 2005.

One detail stuck out from the photograph.

“I looked really close and my sister had a tear in her eye,” she remembered crystally. “That’s the part that I’m really like, I really don’t like talking about this man.”

Franklin, a 63-year-old former LAPD mechanic, is on trial for the murder of 10 women and attempted murder of another. Most of them were black and under the age of 35. Franklin earned the moniker “The Grim Sleeper” after he allegedly took a break from killing in 1988 before he resumed in 2002. (Franklin has pleaded not guilty.)

Morris has no doubt that her sister is one of Franklin’s victims, though RoRo’s body has never been found.

Last victim of 'Grim Sleeper' was found in trash bag inside dumpster, jurors are told

It was New Year's Day 2007, and in a loading dock a team of investigators carefully tipped over the dumpster.

One of them, Sarah DeQuintana, a criminalist with the coroner's office, testified Thursday that she knelt down to remove a large black bag amid the trash and debris. A ziptie was removed and the red fingernails of a woman could be seen.

Inside the bag, discarded among the waste, was the dead body of 25-year-old Janecia Peters.

Peters is believed to be the final victim of the serial killer known as the Grim Sleeper.

(...)

As DeQuintana spoke, photographs of the investigators at work at the coroner's headquarters were projected on a large screen in the downtown Los Angeles courtroom where Franklin is on trial. In the first photo, the criminalist could be seen removing the black bag from the rubbish. Other photographs showed Peters' fingernails inside from the bag, then her naked body folded in the fetal position and finally her body laid on a gurney.

(...)

It was Peters' slaying that prompted the search for a serial killer after investigators determined that DNA found on the bag matched genetic evidence left at the scenes of two previous killings. Prosecutors have said all of the victims are connected to Franklin through either DNA or ballistics evidence.

Sole Survivor Of Alleged “Grim Sleeper” Serial Killer Recounts Horror

"...On Thursday, Washington — the lone survivor of a serial killer who police say roamed the streets of South L.A. for decades — testified in the trial of Lonnie Franklin, Jr. Prosecutors allege he had been on a killing spree of seven young black woman from 1985 to 1988. Then he met Washington — who lived, despite the bullet at point blank range. Three more victims were found in the 2000s, a pause that inspired the nickname the Grim Sleeper.

Washington never knew the name of the man who tried to kill her. On Thursday, prosecutors asked if she was now sure that man was Lonnie Franklin.
“100 percent,” Washington said. “Less hair now, he still looks the same.”..."

How a pizzeria 'busboy' led to an arrest in the Grim Sleeper case

"The busboy at John’s Incredible Pizza was not what he appeared to be....

The busboy was an undercover Los Angeles Police Department detective. Franklin was his mark.

Jurors in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom heard Friday how the detective and others were tasked with surveilling Franklin, who was suspected in a series of murders of women in South Los Angeles.

DNA evidence retrieved from the discarded dishes and food would lead prosecutors to allege that Franklin, a former Los Angeles police garage attendant, is the serial killer known as the Grim Sleeper and linked to a series slayings spanning more than 20 years.."

Defense to target DNA evidence in 'Grim Sleeper' serial murder trial (with clip)

"The attorney for a man charged with killing nine women and a 15-year-old girl in the "Grim Sleeper" case in Los Angeles plans to cast doubt in the minds of jurors Monday by focusing on DNA evidence found on the victims...

Police have dueling theories about the gap. Some think the killings stopped after one intended victim survived in 1988, scaring off the attacker. Other investigators believe there were more victims but their bodies just weren't found.

Franklin's attorney, Seymour Amster, declined to discuss his case in detail, but he has said there's more to it than meets the eye.

Amster said last week that his defense will be centered around DNA evidence found on the victims that was not connected to Franklin. He declined to elaborate.

Amster will deliver his opening statements to jurors on Monday,.."

Defense opens in Grim Sleeper trial by challenging DNA, ballistics evidence

(...)

In an opening statement, defense attorney Seymour Amster told jurors that DNA belonging to other people was found at some of the crime scenes, on victims' clothing and on their bodies — apparently suggesting that men other than Franklin could be involved in the deaths.

(...)

Amster declined to give his opening statement at the onset of the trial, preferring to wait until he began his case.

Before the opening statement, the defense and prosecution once again clashed over a number of issues related to evidence and witnesses Amster intended to have testify.

Prosecutors asked L.A. County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy to disqualify a defense witness who intended to discredit ballistics evidence, saying they were only alerted to the witness over the weekend.

“This is trial by ambush,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Beth Silverman said. “I think these two attorneys don’t give a damn about ethics, the rules, professionalism.… They’ve shown that time and time again.”

Silverman accused Amster of turning the trial “into a circus.”

The judge repeatedly admonished the two attorneys — Silverman for repeatedly interrupting Amster and Amster for shouting during his remarks.

Another issue involved a subpoena the defense served on the LAPD for documents, which the judge ruled was overly broad. She asked Amster to refile the subpoena and narrow its scope.

That request led to a testy exchange:

“Don’t shake your head when I speak,” Kennedy warned the defense attorney, before continuing and stopping again.

“Take your hand away from your face,” she said to Amster, who sat low in his chair. “Don’t be disrespectful.”

“I’m now going to rest, I have no defense!” Amster shouted. “I cannot competently represent this man any further.”

“I want you to chill…,” she said. “Stop yelling at me.”

Kennedy eventually agreed to let Amster amend the subpoena rather than refile it.

“You do need to calm yourself down,” she said.

Plenty of shouting in ‘Grim Sleeper’ trial as defense questions DNA

"The attorney for a man charged with killing nine women and a 15-year-old girl in the “Grim Sleeper” trial in Los Angeles repeatedly shouted at the judge in the case Monday and refused to proceed.

Defense attorney Seymour Amster and the lead prosecutor spent nearly two hours Monday heatedly arguing over a number of points in the trial of Lonnie Franklin Jr., who has pleaded not guilty to 10 murders between 1985 and 2007.

The back-and-forth, which jurors did not see, escalated into an outburst by Amster after Judge Kathleen Kennedy ruled that he would have to refile a subpoena to make it narrower.

“I am now going to rest. We have no defense,” Seymour said to gasps in the courtroom. “I cannot represent this man any further.”..."

Sketch artist tells of 1988 interview with lone survivor of Grim Sleeper assault

"The sketch artist listened as Enietra Washington described the man she said raped and shot her...

When Coleman finished, he showed the sketch to Washington, who agreed the image depicted the man to the best of her recollection, Coleman testified Monday.

As Coleman spoke, the sketch that came from the interview was projected on a large screen in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. The picture bore little resemblance to the stocky 63-year-old with close-cropped receding hair now on trial..."
