That's very telling, IMO, on a couple of levels.
First, that at least one of his women insisted on some sort of proof. Makes me wonder if Vanessa is the only one in the long line of girls since the murder that didn't ask for proof.
Second, that he told the last girl that he would take one for her yet, of course, never did. If he couldn't even take it to keep a "serious" relationship, that says A LOT. He probably thought that the promise of taking it was going to be enough to pacify her. Good for her that she didn't back down. She may have saved her own life with her good instincts.
