GUILTY TN - Zaevion Dobson, 15, killed shielding girls from gunfire, Knoxville, 17 Dec 2015

Knox County Assistant District Attorney said Dobson was killed amid a series of connected gang-related shootings in Knoxville that day. He said Dobson and his friends had gathered on a back porch after attending an evening high school basketball game when shooters approached, firing shots from at least four weapons. Dobson's decision to protect his two friends was later hailed by then-President Barack Obama as an act of bravery. Dobson bled to death on the porch, while the girls were unhurt.

A Knox County jury on Thursday convicted one young man as the primary culprit and two others as helpers in the fatal shooting of an innocent teenager.

The six-man, six-woman jury deliberated six and a half hours in Knox Criminal Court Thursday before finding Christopher Drone Bassett, 22, guilty of first-degree murder in the December 2015 shooting death of Fulton High School football player Zaevion Dobson.

Jurors found Richard Gregory Williams III, 23, and Kipling Colbert Jr., 22, guilty of a lesser charge of facilitation of first-degree murder.

Fulton High remembers Zaevion Dobson at graduation; his mother accepts his diploma
As the graduating seniors of Fulton High School gathered inside Thompson Boling Arena Saturday morning, the seat that should have been occupied by Zaevion Dobson stood noticeably empty.

A red gown, rose and framed photo filled the otherwise empty chair in honor of the local teen who was killed in December 2015.

Zaevion’s mother, Zenobia Dobson, accepted an honorary degree on her son’s behalf.

In an emotional scene, Zenobia embraced those on stage as she accepted the diploma on her son’s behalf, the crowd erupting in cheers and sounding air horns in honor of her fallen son.

Sentencing was Friday ... Bassett was sentenced to life plus 35 years in prison. Colbert was sentenced to 109 years in prison. Williams will serve 143 years in prison.

Men convicted in Zaevion Dobson killing appeal their cases | wbir.com

"A rap video that showed three young men who were later convicted in the killing of a 15-year-old Fulton High School student took center stage Tuesday in a debate over whether it showed artistic expression or damning evidence of gang ties.

Knox County prosecutors introduced the video at trial in 2018 to help secure convictions against Kipling Colbert, Christopher Bassett and Richard Williams in the December 2015 killing of Zaevion Dobson.

Dobson was shot and killed while shielding friends when gunmen showed up in his Lonsdale neighborhood. The prosecution argued there'd been a number of gang-related disturbances the night Dobson, an innocent victim, was killed, and they said the video showed the defendants' interests in gang activities.

Defense attorneys, however, have consistently argued the video made some seven months before the Dobson killing had nothing to do with him and was merely an example of artistic expression."
