Strike call in Turkey as mine toll rises to 274

Soma - Turkey's biggest union has called for a massive strike on Thursday amid mounting anger over the country's worst mining accident, which claimed at least 274 lives with many more still trapped underground.

"Those who keep up with privatisation... policies, who threaten workers' lives to reduce costs... are the culprits of the Soma massacre and they must be held accountable," Turkey's Public Workers Unions Confederation (KESK), which represents 240 000 employees, said on its website.

Prayers for all the miners and their families.

The mine in Soma was acquired in 2005 by the private company Soma Holding in 2005.

Alp Gürkan, owner of Soma Holding, boasted two years ago about his success in slashing production costs at the mine.

"Before, to extract a ton of coal had a cost of $130-$140, and now we have committed to doing it for $23.80," he told Hürriyet newspaper.

From the link above also.

Officials acknowledge there is little hope of finding survivors inside the mine, where roughly 100 men remain trapped some 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the entrance.

The high concentration of carbon monoxide is preventing rescue teams from going deeper inside the mine, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said.

Some rescuers have died already.

Man, RIP miners and rescuers.

Turkey coal mine explosion: Officials deny negligence as mine operator admits there was no rescue chamber

The final death toll from the Turkey coal mine explosion is expected to reach 300, officials have admitted the main rescue chamber had been “disassembled” and miners are still trapped underground, but officials are continuing to deny any negligence over the country's worst mining disaster in history.

Some 284 miners are known to have died in the Soma mine and Energy Minister Taner Yildiz has announced he believes there are “no more than 18” still trapped underground.

This is truely turning into a political battle & violence, so unless something significant happens, I won't be posting on it. I will be following it though.

It's awful the families lost their sole breadwinner, I read. There's nothing else to do in this area but work the mines or sell coal. RIP miners. Prayers for all of you, family & friends.

A huge loss for Turkey, a huge loss for all who knew them. The country needs to look at themselves from the outside looking in. jmo
