A woman is accused of brutally abusing an infant boy, leaving him with brain bleeds and other injuries, according to cops in Wichita Falls, Texas. Adrian Nichole Vetter, 22, is in the local jail on $1 million bond for injury to a child, online records show.

Officers said the victim, a 10-month-old boy, was taken to United Regional Hospital, where staff discovered he had two brain bleeds, according to KFDX. They rushed him over to Cook Children’s Medical Center in the city of Fort Worth. An emergency room doctor told investigators the child’s head injuries indicated shaken baby syndrome.

Vetter, who had been watching the child, claimed he had a seizure and fell backward that Monday, striking his head on the wooden vinyl flooring, authorities claim. But Dr. Elizabeth Peeler, a child abuse pediatrician specializing forensic pediatrics, said the boy, who was in critical condition, was having seizures from severe head trauma. She said the injuries were from physical abuse.

The baby’s mother said that Vetter had been watching her son for two weeks, police claim.

After they confronted Vetter with the consistencies in her story, Vetter said she had been arguing with her husband over the phone about canceling their wedding, police said. Also, the baby had also been refusing to take a nap that Monday at around 11 a.m., an officer said. At around 3 p.m., she lost her temper, grabbed him from the crib, and struck the back of his head on the side rail in an attempt to stop him from crying, she allegedly said. In this version of events, she brought him to the hallway, where she struck his head into the wall forcefully. The baby began gasping for air, she allegedly said.

According to cops, she described bringing him to the living room, put him on the floor, went to the kitchen for milk, and returned to find him unconscious and not breathing. Dr. Peeler, however, said it appeared that Vetter was downplaying what happened; it was believed Vetter hit the baby’s head on the crib and wall several times, not only one time each.

The physical damage included spinal injuries and severe brain trauma, police said. Peeler said she did not know if the baby would survive, but she noted his prognosis was very poor, according to cops. The doctor called the abuse a “near fatality event.”

The baby’s mother said that Vetter had been watching her son for two weeks, police claim. She acknowledged the defendant had a temper, but she “has never seen her take it out on children, just her own dogs.”

It's difficult to read this horror story, but we've seen it, and seen it, and we'll see reports of it again here at WS, in the news, and possibly in our own home towns. <sigh>
Little human beings who have such short and hurtful lives on this earth.

And this from the "Law & Crime" article cited above:
"The baby’s mother said that Vetter had been watching her son for two weeks, police claim. She acknowledged the defendant had a temper, but she 'has never seen her take it out on children, just her own dogs.' ” OMG

It is likely that those close to this child, and possibly the world, will never know what good things he might have done in his lifetime.

You see how someone treats their dogs and let them babysit your baby....

^^^^^THIS.

It's not like the venn diagram of people who beat their pets and people who beat children is two circles. It's closer to being one.

Whether it's a pet, a child, an elderly person, a disabled person, a person who is financially dependent... if you see someone mistreating a living being that can't defend themselves, it's not a stretch to assume that they might behave the same way to another defenseless being.

If you see someone abusing or taking joy in the abuse or pain of an animal, NEVER leave a vulnerable living thing with them, human or animal. It's just not worth the risk.

That said, the mum is a victim. She learnt a horrible lesson by trusting the wrong person. Her child may not survive it, and if he does, he will live with the effects of this attack for the rest of his life.

All the blame here is on the defendant.

Police said the infant was transported to United Regional, where it was discovered the child had bilateral subdural hematomas, or two brain bleeds, and the child needed to be immediately transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth for emergency medical treatment.

A Crimes Against Children detective spoke to an emergency room doctor, who said the victim had severe brain bleeds on both sides of his brain, and the injuries to his head were indicative of “shaken baby syndrome.”

According to the affidavit, Vetter initially told officers on Monday the victim was watching television, sitting on the living room floor, had a seizure, and fell backward, causing him to hit his head on the wooden vinyl flooring.

Vetter then told authorities she took the child into the hallway and struck the victim’s head into the wall of the hallway forcefully. She said the victim was also gasping for air when she struck his head on the hallway wall.

According to the affidavit, Vetter then took the child to the living room, set him down on the floor, and went to the kitchen to get him some milk. She then said she noticed the victim was unconscious and not breathing.

Police said Vetter was then given a reenactment doll, to which she showed and demonstrated to detectives exactly how she struck the victim’s head on the crib and the wall. She said she struck his head once on the crib and once on the wall.

According to the affidavit, Vetter told officers she has mental health disorders but claimed she takes medication for the disorders.

Quote from article in post #1:

WHY do these idiots think that hitting a child on the head is going to make them stop crying.... :(

That poor little boy...

I've wondered how he is doing as well.
I'm hoping he's hanging in there, since we haven't seen an article yet upgrading the charges to homicide.

He's possibly going to be disabled for life, if he survives. People can live rich, beautiful lives with complex disabilities. I am holding out hope that he gets the chance to do just that.

Rest peacefully beautiful baby boy The 10 month old baby SJ Mitchell fought for his life 2 weeks but his injuries were too severe for him to survive.
