Man condemned for killing Lubbock woman loses federal appeal (with clip)

Thursday, May 25th 2017
"...The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling moves 37-year-old Rosendo Rodriguez one step closer to execution for the fatal beating and choking of 29-year-old Summer Baldwin. She's identified in court documents as a pregnant drug-addicted prostitute....

His appeal argued he had deficient legal help at his trial and that his confession was improperly obtained."

Bullshark....I still wonder about Stefanie Hill, the girl at Indiana Village. I ended up living in the apartment that backed up to her's a year later. What you said is actually the first name I've even heard of a suspect. Could you elaborate how you think he's connected?

4 Texas death row inmates lose Supreme Court appeals

"...Rodriguez was convicted of the 2005 beating and choking death of 29-year-old Summer Baldwin, who was five weeks pregnant. Her body was stuffed inside a piece of luggage found at the city landfill in Lubbock, where she lived and where Rodriguez was training as a Marine reservist.

Court records show Rodriguez was linked to at least five other sexual assaults and to the disappearance of 16-year-old Joanna Rogers, who had been missing more than a year. He confessed to killing the teenager, whose body was also found in a suitcase in the Lubbock landfill...."

Rosendo Rodriguez is set to be executed at 6pm Texas (Central) time on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. It has taken approximately the same length of time that Joanna was in this world since Rodriguez killed her to get to this point. She was sixteen years old when she was murdered, may God rest her soul. She would have done so much good in this world. She was just a lovely person. It's such a tragedy, such a horrible tragedy.

Today is the day...I live in Lubbock. He's been trying to appeal his execution but as of now its on for tonight.

Remembering murdered teen, 16-year-old Joanna Rogers

For two months, men and women searched the landfill for that suitcase.

Roughly 900 days after Joanna went missing, they found it. Her body was still inside.

"That was the last day they were going to dig because it's nasty and dangerous out there. We didn't want anybody getting hurt," Joe Bill said, remembering how close they came to never finding his daughter.

"Even after 14 years, it means so much to us that this community has come together and that law enforcement never gave up to bring Joanna home," Kathy said.

Texas executes San Antonio man who stuffed woman’s body into luggage

"...HUNTSVILLE — With his final words, “suitcase killer” Rosendo Rodriguez of San Antonio called for the FBI to investigate the Lubbock County district attorney and medical examiner.

After a final statement that took more than seven minutes in which Rodriguez urged onlookers to write other men on death row, called for a boycott of Texas businesses and referenced his Catholic faith, he died by lethal injection.

“The state may have my body but not my soul,” Rodriguez said....

The lethal dose of pentobarbital started flowing at 6:24 p.m., and Rodriguez was pronounced dead 22 minutes later.

“I had the honor and privilege to know many prison guards and staff,” he told onlookers before his death. “I want to thank all of them. I would like for everyone to write the people on death row as they are all good men, and I am very happy I got to know them. All of their lives are worth knowing about.”

“I want everyone to boycott every single business in the state of Texas until all the businesses are pressed to stop the death penalty,” Rodriguez continued. “With that, Lord, I commend my spirit.”

At one point, he decried the “thousands” he alleged were wrongfully convicted by Lubbock County District Attorney Matt Powell.

“This needs to be brought to justice,” he said. Powell declined to address the condemned man’s final words against him...."
