I agree with your daughter, they need to pass a law that states the punishment to the criminal would be the exactly what they did to the victims. maybe that would make people stop and think ok if i do this to this person and i get caught, the same will happen to me....
im all for keeping people safe in prison, but they have it way too easy!
they need to go back to extremely hard labor, no extra activities at all, its sleep, eat and work....i bet that would start slowing down the rate of people going in!

Michael Bowden was convicted of second-degree felony child abuse on the 10th of August, 2007. He will be evaluated at a mental institution for 90 days before being sentenced. He could serve up to 15 years.

Jade Ferrando survived, due to the medical care that was finally given to her. She had grown 4 inches by December of 2006, and now weighs about 35 pounds, according to her mother, who testified at Michael Bowden’s trial.

Cases like this are why monsters continue to do this. If they would take them out permanently maybe the next one would reconsider hurting a child.

When I saw the picture of that poor baby, I just couldn't imagine her suffering. Further, I can't begin to imagine what her mother thought when she saw her like that. She was clearly quite healthy when mom left for Iraq. I don't know why she felt it was okay to leave the child with the man, but I assume she must have had some sort of comfort level. I'm sure she must feel endless guilt over it. Most of the time I tend to blame the mothers for leaving their children with inappropriate people, but for some reason I feel differently about this one. I guess it's because the little girl was clearly not abused before mom left, even with her level of disability, so I don't think mom's decision was willy-nilly. I think she truly had no idea what this man was capable of. It is a miracle that this child was saved as so many aren't.

do the parole boards even invite victims to hearings? i thought they changed the laws about that so they had to.

garrido's first victim said she didnt know he was even UP for parole till he showed up at the s lake tahoe casino where she worked.....but that was 1988. surely victims and there families have more say now?

The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole announced last week that Michael John Bowden, 28, will be granted parole effective November 2009. He has been ordered to complete mental health treatment and an internal prison drug program.

Bowden was sentenced to serve up to 15 years for child abuse, a second-degree felony. He was convicted of neglecting to care for Jade Ferrando and allowing her to wither down to 12 pounds back in 2006.

A reminder of what Mike Bowden did:

Bowden apologized in court Monday. "I am sorry for everything that happened and for everything I caused," he said. "I made bad choices to drink and do drugs rather than take care of [the child]."

prosecutor Fred Burmester said the case was about a little girl who was nearly starved to death, not about Bowden, who Burmester said tries to portray himself as a victim.

Furthermore, Burmester said the diagnostic report did not show Bowden suffers from full-blown post traumatic stress syndrome. Additionally, the report pointed out Bowden has not accepted full responsibility for what happened, Burmester said.
