Details of Disappearance
Lunsford was employed at the Walmart store in the Village Marketplace on Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield County, Virginia. She worked a shift during the evening hours of December 25 into the early morning hours of December 26, 1996 to prepare for the post-holiday clearance sales.

Lunsford and her ex-boyfriend, who was a co-worker, purchased breakfast at a nearby fast-food restaurant at approximately 8:30 a.m. on December 26. She may have gone to her ex-boyfriend's home after that; his children claim they saw her at the house that day.

Lunsford was scheduled to pick up her three daughters from her mother's house. She never arrived and has not been heard from again. Her burgundy 1994 Nissan Sentra was discovered locked and abandoned in the shopping center's parking lot, not far from her place of work, later during the day. There was no sign of her at the scene.

Lunsford broke up with her boyfriend three months before her disappearance. They remained in touch, however, as they worked together and Lunsford was friendly with his children. Prior to her disappearance, she had threatened to file a sexual harassment claim against him at work.

Her family believes Lunsford's ex-boyfriend was responsible for her disappearance. The police did interview him, but no charges have been filed against him or anyone else in her case.

Lunsford's family members said it's uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. She held three jobs to support her five children and other relatives. Lunsford had been amicably divorced for two years by the time of her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.

Man charged in death of woman who disappeared in 1996

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia have charged a man in the death of a mother of five last seen alive in 1996.

News outlets report that police announced John Howard, 62, of Hanover County, was indicted on a first-degree murder charge on Monday and arrested Tuesday. He’s charged in the death of 38-year-old Linda Lunsford of Amelia County, who was reported missing by her family on Dec. 26, 1996.

Lunsford's remains have not been recovered but the case has been handled as a death investigation for years. Maj. R. Michael Louth was not specific about what led to the arrest nearly 25 years later, but they felt it was the right time to move forward with the evidence they have.

John Howard

Linda E. Lunsford, 38, remains missing after more than two decades, but police say she is dead and they know who killed her. John H. Howard, 62, was indicted Monday (17 May 2021) for allegedly murdering Lunsford, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Lunsford, last seen on Dec. 26, 1996, was reported missing by her family. Police determined her disappearance was suspicious...

She had been working on a late-night shift at Walmart, according to The Chesterfield Observer in 2006. Linda was last seen at a McDonald’s with a man who was both her co-worker and ex-boyfriend. Her family found her 1994 Nissan Sentra abandoned in a Food Lion parking lot in the village of Midlothian.

That ex-boyfriend reportedly told cops that Lunsford visited him at his home to talk about their relationship. He allegedly claimed she was safe when she left.

Linda was threatening to file a sexual harassment complaint against him, said her sister Kathy Rose.

“He was stalking her,” she told the paper. “She made several statements at Thanksgiving that if anything happened to her, it would be him.”

Howard is Lunsford’s ex-boyfriend, Chesterfield County spokeswoman Elizabeth Caroon told Law&Crime in an email.

The department said the following:

Howard was arrested on Tuesday, May 18, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Howard is being held in the Chesterfield County Jail without bond pending a court hearing at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19.

Personnel from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also assisted with this decades-long investigation.

The location of Lunsford’s remains is unknown to this day.

“I want to know where my sister is so I can give her a proper burial,” Rose said in a 2012 interview with NBC 12.

It is unclear if Howard has an attorney in this matter.

Note: Howard is Lunsford’s ex-boyfriend.
