Human skull found in Auburn ravine

King County detectives have reportedly found more bones at the bottom of a deep ravine in Auburn near West Valley Highway where a human skull was found Tuesday.
A resident whose teenage children found the skull Tuesday while exploring said detectives told them today they had also found a lower jaw bone and other bones. It isn’t known if those bones are human.
The bones were discovered at the bottom of a 200-foot-deep ravine off South 292nd Street, even with about South 296th Street.
Both ends of South 292nd Street are blocked off by law enforcement, neighbors said.
Tim Hagan, who lives on the west edge of the ravine, said his two teenage children and friend found the skull about noon. He said it was located deep in the ravine below their home and on the east side.

Details of Disappearance

Marrero received a phone call at the residence she shared with her family in Seattle, Washington on December 3, 1982. She asked her mother to watch her child for the evening and then left the house. Her family stated that Marrero frequently kept odd hours. She did not have any personal belongings with her that night. She has not been seen again.

Marrero may have been a victim of the Green River serial killer(s). Other possible victims of the murderer(s) may include Pammy Annette Avent, April Dawn Buttram, Marie Molina Malvar, Patricia Ann LeBlanc, Kristi Vorak, Kase Lee, Kelli McGinness, and Patricia Osborn. Avent's body was located in August 2003, twenty years after she was reported missing. Buttram's and Malvar's bodies were found in September 2003. None of the other women have been located and all cases remain unsolved.

Ridgway was charged with aggravated murder in four of the deaths linked to the Green River killer(s) in December 2001. Photos of Ridgway are posted below this case summary. Ridgway had been one of the suspects in the case since 1984. Authorities questioned him that year after witnesses placed him with two of the victims and his pickup truck was identified as being at the scene of the victims' last known locations.

Ridgway's home was searched in 1987 and he provided a saliva sample at that time. DNA testing was performed on the saliva in 2001 and matched three of the victims: Opal Mills, Marcia Chapman and Cynthia Hinds. The women's bodies had been discovered in the Green River near Seattle in August 1982. Ridgway was connected to the fourth victim, Carol Christensen, through circumstantial evidence.

Ridgway was arrested twice for soliciting prostitution; once in 1982 and again in October 2001. Many of the Green River victims were runaways or prostitutes. A 1980 charge against Ridgway was dropped when a prostitute claimed he choked her. Ridgway told authorities that he attacked her in self-defense, as she was allegedly biting him. One of his former wives came forward after his 2001 arrest and claimed that Ridgway preferred to have sexual relations outdoors. She also said that he often employed a chokehold while engaged in sexual activity. A prostitute who stated Ridgway paid her for sex in the early 1980s supported the story, stating that he attempted to choke her during intercourse.

Ridgway's residence and his parents' home were searched after his 2001 arrest. Authorities discovered an envelope containing bone fragments, tufts of human hair, numerous blood stains, boxes of latex gloves, costume jewelry and several wigs. Many of the assumed Green River victims were missing jewelry and/or wigs at the time their remains were discovered.

Ridgway is married and his neighbors considered him to be a family-oriented individual. Profilers have said that he does not fit the mold of most accused serial killers, as he did not seek attention for his crimes.

Prosecutors announced in April 2002 that they would seek the death penalty in Ridgway's case. Authorities have located several of his former vehicles and purchased his pickup truck and camper from their current owners in May 2002. A photo of his truck is posted below this case summary. Ridgway owned the truck during the early 1980s, the time when many of the victims disappeared or were discovered deceased. Investigators stated that they hoped to uncover evidence related to the murder cases inside the vehicles.

In a surprise move, Ridgway pleaded guilty to 48 counts of murder in November 2003. He agreed to cooperate with authorities in exchange for them dropping the death penalty specifications against him. It was he that led them to the bodies of Buttram, Avent and Malvar. Ridgway will serve life in prison with parole instead of facing execution. With his cooperation investigators hope to uncover the remains of the other victims.

A number of comments in this (KOMO news) article are stating that Ridgway may now be eligible for the DP if he didn't previously admit to having murdered Becky.

Becky was one of seven previously identified possible victims that he was not charged with...but the Wikipedia article is unclear whether he denied killing her or not.

It is difficult to discern if the comments in the news article have any merit, but it brings up an interesting question-- if he did deny killing Becky or keep LE from finding her remains, should his "deal" for revealing the whereabouts of the other victims be null and void?

A second issue is whether they can actually tie her murder to Ridgeway with the evidence that they have.

This is a article I think for now.

AUBURN, Wash. -- A skull found in an Auburn ravine on Tuesday has been positively identified as Rebecca "Becky" Marrer, the King County Sheriff's Department confirmed Thursday. Detectives believe Marrero was likely a victim of serial killer Gary Ridgway, the so-called Green River Killer.
Marrero was last seen on December 3, 1982, when she left a motel room at S. 168th and Pacific Highway South. She was 20 years old at the time

I think they will be able to. She was found in the same location as Marie Malvar, who he did admit to.

Edited to add - Sorry, I apparently have no clue how to post. That was in response to the gentleman who was asking about them being able to tie her murder to Ridgway.

It is ridiculously frustrating that after all of this time, they still are finding the remains of women that he killed. It is as if it won't ever stop. Whenever I hear that they have found bones in the South End, I immediately wonder if they are his victims. I know that a lot of people in the area have the same reaction. What makes it even stranger is that this is not a clever man. How did he get away with crimes of this magnitude for decades?

article w/ some of Ridgeway's interview

In the tape, Ridgway appeared unable to provide concrete details about Marrero. He told investigators Marrero's body might be elsewhere, not in Auburn.

"North Bend or maybe off 410 or something," said Ridgway.

Ridgway's former attorney says he doesn't believe Ridgway will face new charges or the death penalty.

Just so posters on this thread know, I merged the 2 threads about the bones and the skull as they were from the same find. If the bones found near the skull turn out to be from someone else, we can always start a new thread for the bones.

I separated outan old find from 2002 and put it in it's own thread and locked it because it is old;but left it out for reference. If the mods want to re-open for discussion, that is perfectly fine, but it was causing confusion and it appeared to be a new find rather than an old one from 2002.

Hope that clears up the confusion.

"She came back for Christmas in December, which is a blessing," Mary said. "She left in December, she came back in December."

"We're looking forward to her burial and how we can put her at rest at peace where we want her, not where he left her."

But that burial may still be some time away, she said. Marrero's remains are still evidence, and Mary said investigators can keep them if it means the prime suspect, Gary Ridgway, will stand trial for her sister's murder, "and hopefully given the death penalty," she said.

Marrero, 20, disappeared from Seattle, Washington on December 3, 1982. She was presumed to be a victim of the Green River Serial Killer, Gary Leon Ridgway. Ridgway pleaded guilty to 48 murders in 2003 and was sentenced to 48 terms of life in prison, but he wasn't charged in Marrero's case. In December 2010, her skull was found in a ravine in Auburn, Washington, not far from where one of Ridgway's victims was found in 2003. Authorities will review Marrero's homicide and decide whether or not to file charges.

I read Ann Rule's book on the GR killer. Hopefully this will be the conclusion to Ridgway's story.
