Prosecution: Caught in web of lies, Chandler Halderson killed parents

Chandler Halderson was living a lie, the prosecution in his murder trial said Tuesday — about having a job, going to school and having a better job waiting for him in Florida.

And when his father figured it out, the prosecution claims, Halderson decided to kill him and his mother and dispose of their bodies, first in the family fireplace and then around southern Wisconsin — and then he lied about that, too.

Halderson, 23, presented himself to the world as a soon-to-be graduate of a renewable resources engineering program at Madison Area Technical College with a job at American Family Insurance but a better one waiting for him at Elon Musk's SpaceX, Deputy District Attorney William Brown said in his opening statement
 
'I felt like I needed to do something:' Brother of Chandler Halderson testifies in homicide trial
MADISON, Wis. — The brother of Chandler Halderson says he wasn’t very worried about his parents’ whereabouts until Chandler himself said he was concerned.

Testifying in his brother’s homicide trial Tuesday morning, Mitchell Halderson said it was not like his parents to go up to their cabin in Langlade County on 4th of July weekend without saying something to him, but his concern grew when Chandler said he still hadn’t heard from them by the time he claimed they would be back.

Mitchell described Krista Halderson as a “helicopter parent,” and said she would have let him know if they were leaving town.

The next witness called is Daniel Kroninger, who is was a body shop estimater at Zimbrick Body Shop in July 2021. Kroninger tells jurors he was a co-worker and friend of Krista Halderson, who visited her family home and met Bart Halderson.

Kroninger: We drove over to her house to see if I could get ahold of anyone ... Just 'cause it's weird for her not to show up to work and I was living just a couple miles away at the time.

Kroninger testifies he looked through a window of the Halderson home and noticed a table on its side. After that, he spoke with the defendant, Chandler Halderson, outside the home.

Kroninger: He had given us a story about how they had gone up north in an emergency to the cabin with a couple, that he was not sure who they were. That they were picked up earlier that day ... That they would be gone for a couple of days. #ChandlerHalderson

Brother, officers testify in Halderson case
Chandler Halderson is charged with two felony counts each of each of first degree intentional homicide, false reporting of a missing or kidnapped person, mutilation of corpse, and hiding a corpse.

The Dane County Circuit Court trial began Tuesday with opening statements from both sides, followed by prosecution witnesses.


Prosecutors believe Halderson killed his parents on July 1. He reported them missing to the Dane County Sheriff’s Department on July 7, and he was arrested the next day as evidence mounted. Chandler Halderson requested a speedy trial and it has moved the case to a jury trial faster than the usual timeline.
 
'That's not my best friend:' Family friends dispute version of events described by Chandler Halderson
Prosecutors called members of the Hilgendorf family to the witness stand on Wednesday morning. Jane Hilgendorf said she first met Krista Halderson in middle school and they had been best friends since their freshman year at East High School in Madison more than 30 years ago. She testified she thought it was unusual that Krista Halderson had apparently not shown up to work on Friday, July 2 without calling in.

“That’s not my best friend,” Jane Hilgendorf said she thought to herself at the time.

His life appeared poised to head in a more promising direction, especially after Halderson announced in June 2021 that he’d been hired by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and would be moving to Florida later that month. His girlfriend planned to go with him. He told her he’d already rented an apartment and bought a car.
