'Somebody knows' what happened to William Tyrrell: Inquest
Someone "undoubtedly" knows more about what happened to William Tyrrell, an inquest into his disappearance and suspected death has been told.

The missing toddler was aged three years and three months when he vanished without a trace from the backyard of his foster grandmother's house in Kendall on the NSW mid north coast on September 12, 2014.
Counsel assisting the coroner Gerard Craddock SC told a directions hearing at the NSW Coroners Court on Wednesday that while a number of pieces of information of "varying" quality had already come to light some of it had been designed to "waste police's time".

He continued to call for anyone with information to come forward.
"There's undoubtedly somebody out there who knows more and who has not been in contact yet," he said.

"We ask people to come forward with as much information as they have."
Mr Craddock said the police investigation into William's disappearance was ongoing, with many officers still working hard to solve the mystery.

The inquest will resume on August 5.

William Tyrrell search was ‘impossible’ from the start, expert | Daily Mail Online

An expert tracker who was called in to find William Tyrrell just hours after he was first reported missing said the task was 'impossible' by the time he arrived at the scene.

Senior Constable Matthew Gates told an inquest into the disappearance of the three-year-old that he and his police dog Gov did not get to William's foster grandmother's home at Kendall, on the NSW mid-north coast, until two hours after he vanished.

Snr Const Gates tendered a statement to the inquest telling how their task to search for William was made even harder by the rough terrain which quickly tired the police dog.

William Tyrrell's foster nan named neighbour

Police arrived to search the house and surrounding area and the scene descended into "pandemonium", the foster grandmother stated at the time.

"I can't think of anyone who would want to harm William," she said, noting local police officer Wendy Hudson first asked the question.

"I suggested (a neighbour) across the road (as he keeps odd hours and lives alone).

"Wendy assures me that she has checked him out thoroughly."

Missing Person Unit disbanded after mismanagement fears
“I think it’s very important for all unidentified bodies in a little country like Australia to be identified,” Bruce West said.

“If next of kin provides DNA to police agencies around the country, this should be done.”

Why the search for William Tyrell was "impossible" from the start

“During the three days I spent searching, PD (Police Dog) Gov was pushed to the point of exhaustion on several occasions,” the Senior Constable wrote.

“The terrain was extremely difficult to walk through even for an adult.

"It consisted of thick undergrowth made up of long grass and lantana.

“After completing my searching on the 13th September, PD Gov collapsed at the rear of my police vehicle.

“I removed approximately 30 paralysis ticks from him. I contacted East Port Vet Clinic in Port Macquarie and put them on notice that I might … bring PD Gov in for treatment.”

Early clues in Tyrrell search revealed

The next morning, Sen Const Rowley returned a third time to search the home with a detective and another officer.

The man's television showed he had selected news coverage of William's disappearance from a menu.

The man told Sen Const Rowley he was in poor health and had "sleep patterns" left over from his time as a taxi driver.

Car drove 'crazily' day Tyrrell vanished, inquest hears
Kendall man Tim Palmer told the boy's coronial inquest on Wednesday he'd had a conversation with friend Michael McInally in 2018 in which Mr McInally said he needed to get something off his chest.

"He said if I was to tell anyone this story, he would deny it," Mr Palmer told the NSW Coroners Court.

Whitegoods repairman Bill Spedding with wife when William Tyrrell vanished, inquest hears

The wife of whitegoods repairman Bill Spedding has told the inquest into three-year-old William Tyrrell's disappearance she was with her husband drinking coffee about the time the boy went missing.

The NSW Coroners Court on Monday also heard of the shock Margaret Spedding suffered as police raided her home in early 2015 in the search of the young boy.

The William Tyrrell inquest has resumed in Taree, but sex offender Tony Jones is still on his way here from Sydney and won’t resume his testimony until later this morning. Local woman Iris Northam has taken the stand. Her and husband ran a scrap metal business. @10NewsFirst

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mrs Northam told the court she and her husband previously employed Frank Abbott to do “odd jobs” around the scrap metal yard. Abbott is a person of interest in the case and is currently serving jail time for child sexual offences. He’s listening to the testimony via video link.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mrs Northam is asked about a woman found murdered in a local river bed in 1996. She told the court she saw Abbott shortly after and he had “some marks on his arm” which he claimed were from “oysters”. She told the court “they didn’t look like oyster scratches to me”.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mrs Northam told the court the scratches looked “more like finger marks had gouged skin”. She was asked if she “had a level of concern” about it and she replied “well, sort of, yes”.

The questions refer to the murder of 37-year-old Margaret Cox, who was found bludgeoned to death two days after she disappeared while walking home between Cundletown and Taree on December 19, 1996.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mrs Northam is now asked about the sawmill where Abbott was living around the time William Tyrrell disappeared. That site has been searched extensively by detectives recently.

Lia Harris on Twitter

The court heard Abbott used to spend time with a friend named Ray who lived at the Kendall Showground. Mrs Northam couldn’t recall his last name.

Tony Jones
has now taken the stand again after arriving from Sydney. He’s being asked about the two phones he had in 2014.

Lia Harris on Twitter

He’s asked about phone calls he made the day William disappeared and told the court “I have no recollection of that day”.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Abbott is now questioning Jones himself and asked him about two men he saw in the bush in Kendall, when he claims one man said his name was Jones. Jones denied it was him. Jones also said “you just admitted we never met, Frank”.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Abbott told the court he later met Jones when they were both serving time in Grafton jail.

Lia Harris on Twitter

The court has now been closed for further confidential evidence.

Peter Huntley
told the court Frank Abbott lived next door to their house in a caravan in 2015. The caravan was previously occupied by Geoff Owen, who testified at the inquest last year about the work he did at William’s foster grandmother’s house installing decking.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mr Huntley told the court his “initial impression” of Abbott was that he was a “very helpful man” and he often saw him walking into town.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Mr Huntley told the court Abbott knocked on their door late one night to tell them Geoff Owen was “a person of interest in the Willial Tyrrell case”. They thought it was “the oddest thing”.

Lia Harris on Twitter

Jodie Huntley told the court she was wary of Abbott and “didn’t want him around my children”. The Huntleys have both finished their evidence.

Lia Harris on Twitter

The hearing has been adjourned and will resume tomorrow morning.

Lia Harris on Twitter

We can also reveal police police searched the property nextdoor to the Huntleys where Abbott lived in 2015 just two weeks ago, bringing in sniffer dogs and police divers to search the dam. Geoff Owen, who repaired William’s foster grandmother’s decking, also lived there in 2014.
