[font=Arial, Helvetica]A senior citizen who fractured her hip when she tripped over vegetables at a farmer's market two years ago is suing the city and the downtown business improvement district that sponsored the event.

Winifred Hoder, 77, of Shippan Avenue, was walking on a Main Street sidewalk near Columbus Park on Sept. 19, 2002, when she tripped on discarded lettuce, green peppers, broccoli and other vegetables, according to the civil suit she filed Aug. 30 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Hoder claims the city and the Downtown Special Services District, which sponsors the weekly farmer's markets in the park, put pedestrians at risk by failing to keep the sidewalks and curbs free of "vegetable debris."

According to her suit, Hoder slipped on the discarded vegetables and fell to the ground, fracturing her left hip.

Her attorney, Wesley Malowitz of Stamford, declined to comment.
