A man is to face trial in March for the 1986 strangulation of 16 year old Elaine Doyle in Greenock, Glasgow, Scotland in 1986.

Police say John Docherty - 21 at the time - attacked Elaine on her way home from a disco, seized her by the hair, stripped her of her clothes, forced her to the ground and then strangled her with a ligature. He is also accused of stealing a handbag and its contents on the same date.

Docherty, now 49, also faces another charge; that between 1990-1995 he assaulted Linda Hargie, seizing her by the hair, grabbed her by the arms and neck, pushed, struggled and punched her.

Docherty's pleading not guilty. Trial set to begin March 25th in Edinburgh High Court.

This is the first indictment served up since the Crown Office set up a Cold Case Unit in 2011.

The man on trial for the murder of Elaine Doyle volunteered a sample of DNA to detectives - which matched DNA found at the crime scene...

Fiona McMahon, 42, who heads the specialist DNA database team at the Scottish Police Authority lab in Dundee, said the sample from Mr Docherty was one of 361 processed in her lab.

She told the High Court in Edinburgh she compared it with what was tagged "the crime scene profile." Ms McMahon said: "It was a full match."

A former soldier has been convicted of murdering 16-year-old Elaine Doyle in Greenock in 1986.

John Docherty, 49, from Dunoon, Argyll, had denied strangling the teenager whose naked body was found yards from her home in the Inverclyde town...

Sentence was deferred until August when Docherty will find out the minimum he will have to serve of a life term.

The documentary of this case was on “Murdertown” this week, on the Crime and Investigations channel, worth a look.
