Although new as a member to this site, I’ve been lurking since I found you shortly after Taylor disappeared. I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your dedication and tenacity to dig for the truth in these cases. I am most impressed.
What bothers me the most about Mariah, is that I know how the DSS “system” works in Onslow County. I worked EMS/healthcare there and saw injuries to children that were obviously from abuse, and DSS turned a blind eye. I know of several deaths that occurred after cases were opened by DSS and closed. It is very much a broken system.
Additionally, the area where this occurred is ingrained in my memory. I can see every location that is being reported, and with the trailer park, most of the residents aren’t on the right side of the law therefore making them VERY reluctant to speak up. The county is poor and this area poorer. There are extensive creeks and waterways throughout, all of which have the potential for alligators and large catfish. I’ve walked some of the area for land search training, and it is not forgiving (I was trained to search for missing people through the EMS services there).
Finally, in response to LEO on scene, the law enforcement community would call in specialists from the FBI and NCIS to assist for several reasons, most of which have been mentioned (specialty teams, federal property jurisdiction) and these organizations work hand in hand quite frequently, especially with NCIS. This will also allow access to more forensic labs, staff and equipment. The Sheriff, although not the best public speaker, is an incredibly competent and smart man. He worked with the FBI so he knows how to utilize resources.
If any of you have questions about the region, please don’t hesitate to ask. I am glued to this site for a glimmer of hope that she will be found alive.
