I believe it was just the red pack cover hanging on the tree.
Yes I think you’re right. I was looking for the post there on Facebook but couldn’t find it but the red cover rings a bell.
Also, when just looking there seen one of the people he hiked with say that he had said he was divorced. So there’s an ex out there who surely would recognise him even if he had lost a good amount of weight. There are some really clear photos of him around.

Thank you. I thought I read somewher that he was divorced but could never find it again.

I read things then forget where I read them from. I went through over 2k comments last night to find that one.
Lots of people mention him being found with handwritten code on him but I’ve never seen a post stating that. Just posts from people saying they’d heard it.

I read that too. And never found it again. I find new things everytime I search but never what I actually went looking for.

I believe Obsidian mentioned he was divorced. The hiker that he talked to about Dr. Who said he had just broke up with his gf. I also read that he had missed a food drop and was given information on the next one. I believe that was the code that they found in his pocket.

Maybe Robert Wayne Roush?

Missing Person Case

"Indicated to family that he had interest in hiking the Appalachian Trail. Spoke to sister on telephone from Virginia stating that he lost his wallet, but retained his New York ID."

Perhaps he hiked the AT and kept on hiking after that?

Height is a range: 5'8"-5'11" - UID was 5'8".
Weight 160lb -- IMO, it would be believable that he could have gone down below 100 lbs if he hiked for 3 years and only ate what others gave him or what he could catch himself.

Eyes say hazel, not blue-grey, but that could be incorrect-- It's hard to tell eye color from photos but his seem like they could appear greyish in some lighting.

If anyone feels this is a potential match, please submit, thanks.
Good find Gardner1850. He looks to have lots of similarities with the UID.
The beard line on his face and chin match and also matches on his chin.
Also the eyebrows the left looks straighter and lower and the right is slightly higher with a slight curve. Iam feeling you have a match here!!
The nose is a little off but I know your nose can change a bit with weight loss. Iam still feeling you have a match!
Oh I hate autocorrect ha!

Thanks madamx, but he has been ruled out.

I think he’s too young and too tall but keep coming back. They called off the search for him after it was determined he was deceased. Still in Namus and no body recovered.

Missing Person Case

Found Deceased - NY - Kurt Beehler, 24, Niagara Falls, 8 April 2017

Thanks Coffee56, but the Sheriff has said they have checked NAMUS and the UID is not anyone in NAMUS. Feel free to send it in if you feel strongly (I think the nose is spot on) but just letting you know the Sheriff's posts about this have been pretty clear (they could always be wrong, of course).

I believe Obsidian mentioned he was divorced. The hiker that he talked to about Dr. Who said he had just broke up with his gf. I also read that he had missed a food drop and was given information on the next one. I believe that was the code that they found in his pocket.

Can you tell me where you saw this info, please?
DO NOT link if it's on a private/individual's social media page (Reddit linking is also not allowed) just point me in the direction or tell me how to find it, thanks.

If he missed a food drop, where was that drop being mailed FROM? Could that place/person be helpful here?

I was curious about that as well which is why I wanted to find the source of the info (plus I can add it to the timeline if I have a linkable source). I wonder if it's possible, however, that he did not miss his food drop but only told the person he was hiking with that he had. I have been reading a lot of AT hiking blogs and I get the sense that most hikers would help out a fellow hiker in that situation-- by either sharing their food or giving him some money to resupply. That may be how he survived so long on the trail with limited resources.

On the other hand, I think it's totally possible he had arranged food drops and communicated with his friends or family every few months. His story is not too different from a lot of AT thru hikers. Many quit their jobs, sell most of their possessions or leave their things in storage with friends or family so they don't have to pay rent while hiking. Many are essentially "homeless" while hiking (but unlike the homeless living destitute on the street AT hikers have resources and friends helping them while they hike). Although he supposedly made a comment about "living in Bear Mountain State Park for 2 weeks" before deciding to head South that doesn't necessarily mean it was a spur of the moment decision to hike the AT. He seems to have had a sense of humor and I have to wonder if the "living in the park" comment was tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps it took him 2 weeks to hike the park trails because of his inexperience. Or he could have had all his equipment and thought he would try out hiking around the park trails (the AT loops around Bear Mountain Park) and if he hated it he could always get back on a bus and go back to NYC.

IDK, I still go back and forth on if this was a planned out hike or if he was living spontaneously. I tend to lean toward planned because of the main items of his gear only being available at the store in Keene Valley, NY and the photos show he had most everything very early on in his hike. I also like to think he had someone he was keeping in touch with who knew he was hiking but they are not expecting to hear from him for several months. His family or friends may just think he is still out there hiking. I hope when the holidays and cold weather roll around he will be missed by someone who knew he was out there hiking and expected to hear from him.

(Sorry for the long rambling response )

This is so helpful seeing it all written down this way. I would love to know what he was doing in May 17 and who gave him the name denim. No one has came forwards from early on in his hike or late on in it either.

You mentioned earlier you wondered what he did for thanksgiving. He would have also had a birthday on the trails at some point and what did he do for Christmas and New Year as well?

So many questions and I really hope more people come forward and they are able to identify him. It just obviously hasn’t been seen by the right person(s) yet but if I can see it in the UK, hopefully it’s only a matter of time.

This plays on my mind so much it’s unreal

Thanks madamx, but he has been ruled out.

What?! no Way?! Omg . where have I been?! Really?! I actually thought you had a match omg!... Iam so far behind on this post it's Not funny!!! I'll catch up eventually!

You know, there are times I have often wondered, how many people get ruled out and they actually ARE a Match.

Well the Sheriff has not been updating the NAMUS ruleout list (so maybe not official-official) but they replied on their facebook to someone who suggested him saying he was not the decedent. I can't think of a case where that has happened that they ruled someone out and were wrong, so IDK how often it happens. In this case they probably have his DNA, his fingerprints and his dentals all in NAMUS so if the MP has any of those identifiers on file it is probably a fast rule out. That may be why they are saying he is not anyone in NAMUS. JMO.
