Hurricane Florence - September 2018

  • #241
This is what happened to us in 1994.. Alberto came in and hovered over our area for days on end dumping over two to three feet of rainfall. It caused us to have a 500 year flood. Over 200 caskets were floating in the river. All bridges were under water. Millions of dollars in damages to homes and businesses. Loss of life was around 65 iirc...due to being swept away in flood waters or from toppling trees. It took over a decade to fully recover in some areas.

Now Florence is going to be much much worse than what we experienced. With it possible to affect so many states this could be a major problem restoring power.

These states including Georgia are usually the states who sends power teams to restore power but if they are without power themselves hopefully other states will come into to assist those in need.

I watched the interview , not sure the outlets stance (the MSM stuff ) but i saw it

Army general who fixed Bush’s failure after Katrina warns Trump administration isn’t prepared for Hurricane Florence

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré (ret) was the man sent to New Orleans in wake of President George W. Bush’s failure after Hurricane Katrina.

“The general will remain a heroic figure during and after Katrina because his presence was a turning point and brought hope to a situation of almost total hopelessness,” said MSNBC host Brian Williams.

“But Brian, what I learned between hurricane Katrina and Rita when you’re given another hurricane watch to look out for, don’t spend a whole lot of time talking about the last storm, talk about the future storm.

Maria:

“That was a category 4 storm, and we did not maneuver enough assets using the expeditionary capability of the United States military to basically follow that storm in,” he said.

When speaking about Florence, the retired general said the one thing he didn’t hear from FEMA in the briefing today was “how many ships are going to be coming in after the hurricane, how many hundreds of helicopters on standby from the Department of Defense, how many high clearance trucks are on standby.”

He explained that the states have thousands of National Guard members each and that they’ll be needed.

“What I heard FEMA say was they had 800,000 liters of water,” he said. “If you evacuate a million people, the math don’t work. They have less than half a million meals. They need to stay out of logistics and make sure we’ve got the response ready dealing with assistance from large units like the military to help do the search and rescue.”

He warned that if people don’t do evacuation in a timely manner lives could be lost while people are still on the road.

“If that storm came in at a category 4, just about everything under that cone of uncertainty is not going to have electricity,” he continued. “And the people who decided to stay back, they need to understand this. The United States Army is evacuating the people from the coast and the army bases. The United States Marine Corps have moved inland and moved the Marines to Georgia away from the storm. The United States Navy has moved its ships out to sea and sent the families inland.”

He warned that those who think they can ride it out should take a cue from the military instead.

“Those people who think they can rough it out and you’re inside the cone of uncertainty because you’re going to have two things, you’re going to have to win of a category 3 or 4 that’s going to take your roofs out, it’s going to take the power out, it’s going to close the roads, and we’ve already talked substantively about the impact of surge,” he continued. “As that water goes inland, as it starts to flood in the high ground, that water is going to run back to the ocean.”

I join with everyone in praying for all who will be affected by Hurricane Florence.

Such a frightening time for everyone in those areas.

I was just on the website of the National Weather Service and the warnings are very clear to evacuate.

Fema doing it scanner like I want you guys there to hear this

telling us stuff we know for the last week

first guy

rain up to 10 inches - wrong

this is bad storm - we know

they worry about life -that is what we pay for you

that had better not be it

they turned it over to the red cross -- the nation is about to experience a calamity and fema talks for 70 seconds and above is what they said in its entirety

questions

discussing money reductions

they have plenty of things

-- breaking now power will go out breaking now

how much money in disaster relief fund (direct question) 20 billion ( see the costs of other cat 4 not even adjusted for inflation)

now talking about fema needs help from all agencies

he is a schlep in polo shirt , not

talks about moving things around

i have to stay away from this -- lots of Maria talk

he is explaining again there will be power outages

they are not evacuating a prison in a mandatory evac - he knows nothing about that and that is not his job

asked about poor people how do they run for their lives

his response find help yourself ask your neighbors (dude they had an ability to run - the question was what is fema doing to help those that don't have a way out)

breaking this is not a tropical storm

we will figure out what we need to do after it destroys everything

this is actually the way it went folks

leave people please

That was Honore main point resources need to be lined up now ready to roll

I've never lived through a direct hit, but have been through the edges of big storms and/or hit with a downgraded hurricane....I've noticed the strange feeling before the storm arrives. You know it's coming, yet the weather at the moment is fine. Today is that strange day. We wait.

I was out with friends at dinner last night, and unlike what I expected (since we are not in the path), people were indeed talking about Florence and are aware of the potential damage. I thought it was going unnoticed, but that doesn't seem to be the case in my small sample size of 8 people. :) Maria is still fresh in memories and I noticed a big concern about aftermath.

Chad on cnn

garage folks park your car right up to the door touch the bumper to the actual door -- weakest part of your house is garage door and you want to try and keep it from being blown out

If a million evacuates as the state officials are telling them to then that million will not need Fema supplies now since they will be out of the effected areas.

Our daughter and her family evacuated yesterday. They are in a safe place in another state.

I trust Fema and I believe they are far more competent in handling storms in our country than prior ones.

First, Cariis, I wanna thank you for all the information you provide here (and on other threads). I love your posts! This one is disturbing though, I mean is this a joke!?!? Guess it's every man for himself.

Myself, I am stressing because a friend of mine lives on the Neuse River, Oriental, North Carolina. I had texted him two days ago and asked him if he was going to get out of Dodge---expecting a yes answer. He just said he had a place to go ten miles inland that is a forty foot elevation. Somehow, this is not relieving my anxiety about what could happen to him. If it were me, I would have already gone!!! Will be saying my prayers. It's all I can do.

I dont pray

thinking about it tho !

HOnore was incredible -- and both times yesterday (when you trust someone....) one feels more despair for what might happen

I am starting to feel like a daddy begging anyone on here that should be evacuated that chose to ride it out ( I have never made a judgement or anything to anyone's choices ) but these poor people are now in a mess AFTER AFTER that is the key point

there is nothing anyone can do about DURING

but AFTER is our govt job

Up until HOnore yesterday my thoughts about Maria was its location

in the beginning

to learn yesterday that the idiots at the top of fema learned nothing and are now gonna do the same thing again

money

the one just now -- I know nothing and I could have done the presser

just think about this my friends -- apparently even when a monster is coming you put out for national news presser someone that looks and sounds like he would not even be interesting to drink with!

The head of the agency is not the one doing this?? There is a heap of info in that alone

10 o clock and i feel like a cocktail (not really but!)

What happens when people have no money coming in because they cannot work? Certainly mortgages and credit company bills don’t stop.

I do not know whereI would go in such an emergency. No relatives anywhere near . A shelter sounds horrifying.

People I know who've evacuated to shelters in the past, swear they will never do it again.

What was the biggest complaint? I'm imagining cleanliness?

I'm curious because it's probably something that can be fixed for future emergencies.

For one, sharing a bathroom with how many people? Sleeping with how many people? Showers? People with medical concerns. Women with menstruation , issues. . Pregnant. You name it. Nightmare.

I think I would rather sleep in my car and get a gym membership for showers in whatever area is safe. Nightmare

Noise was mentioned frequently. Staying in a room with screaming kids isn't something I'd be able to handle. Can't blame the kids, obviously they're scared but...

I just want to point out that if anyone has Flood (water) insurance and/or homeowners (wind) insurance, you'll need to (eventually) file a claim with FEMA in order to file a claim with the flood and/or homeowner's insurance. IThe insurance company will ask for a FEMA number. I think that's how it worked after Sandy. But you can file with your own insurance first, but you'll need to file with FEMA if you need any assistance (even if you have insurance).

Also, don't expect any FEMA help if you already have flood and/or homeowners insurance. Also, you cannot claim on your homeowners insurance that your home is flooded. You need actual flood insurance.

We had flood insurance and received nothing from FEMA but did receive money to start to rebuild the water damage to our home from our flood insurance company. Our homeowners insurance just paid for a roof tile that flew off and a fence that fell.

Also, it's good to have CONTENTS added to your flood insurance policy. We didn't and regretted it very much after Sandy. All of the furniture, electronics, appliances, clothing, etc. were not covered under the regular flood (just the home itself), so a lot of items we had to pay out of pocket to replace. :(

If your home is severly damaged, FEMA will offer rental assistance. TAKE IT! We didn't take it but after a few days working in the house without electricity and heat/a-c/ no working appliances, we wished we did take rental assistance but when we called back they wouldn't change any paperwork.
This is useful info, JG. Might be worthwhile to bump up again after the storm leaves and people are figuring out what to do.
