Hurricane Michael leaves 'unimaginable destruction'

Panama City, Fla. – The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael came into focus Thursday with rows upon rows of homes found smashed to pieces, and search-and-rescue crews made their way into the stricken areas in hopes of accounting for hundreds of people who defied evacuation orders.

At least two deaths were blamed on Michael, and it wasn’t done yet: Though weakened into a tropical storm, it continued to bring heavy rain and blustery winds to the Southeast as it pushed inland, soaking areas still recovering from last month’s Hurricane Florence...

Family awaits word on loved ones who've gone quiet since hurricane hit

https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/10/11/us...ved-ones/index.html?r=https://www.google.com/

“More than 500,000 customers lost power in Alabama, Georgia and Florida, and some people haven't been able to reach loved ones since Michael made landfall Wednesday afternoon.”

Snip

“Michael has been downgraded to a tropical storm as it slams Georgia with heavy rain and dangerous winds and heads toward the storm-weary Carolinas. It's expected to bring tornadoes, rainfall and unprecedented wind damage along its path.“

Hurricane Michael was a storm for the record books, and by one important measurement was more powerful at landfall than notorious past monsters such as Katrina or Andrew.

Instead of wind speed, barometric pressure should be considered the best way to measure a hurricane's strength, Derrick Herndon, an atmospheric scientist at Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, told National Geographic.

And referring to a hurricane's damage, a study last year in Nature Communicationssaid that "pressure better explains historical economic damages than does maximum wind speed." This is because central pressure combines both wind speed and storm size, the study said.
Michael officially stronger than Katrina at landfall

The area is largely inaccessible due to damaged roadways and bridges, but drone footage shows a startling bird's-eye glimpse of the destruction Michael caused when it made landfall near Mexico Beach Wednesday, packing winds of 155 mph — just shy of a Category 5 hurricane.
Scott told people who live on the coast not to try to get back and to stay off the roads. An 80-mile stretch of Interstate 10, which weaves through the Panhandle, was closed so crews could clear debris, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Many more roads were not officially closed, but impassable.

But news of the coming disaster also brought charities and volunteers to the scene to help with immediate rescues and long-term recovery. You can assist these efforts through the Public Good website, by clicking here.

Folks who had to evacuate from Michael's path can let friends and family know they are safe through the American Red Cross website's Safe and Well page and Facebook's Safety Check on its Hurricane Michael Crisis Response page. Both of these tools can also be used to check on people you know in the area.

The American Red Cross is also encouraging people to give blood. It is reporting a critical need for both blood and platelet donations. You can make an appointment either online, through its blood donor app or by calling 1-800-733-2767.

Other organizations, including the Salvation Armyand Global Giving, are taking donations to help assist victims of the storm. The Humane Society is helping animals who may have been left behind when families evacuated the storm zone. If you're interested in helping or fostering animals, click here.

Hurricane Michael Live Updates: Desperate Scenes at Storm-Damaged Hospital

Emergency officials rushed to evacuate more than 300 patients from storm-damaged hospitals and a vast search-and-rescue operation took shape across the Florida Panhandle on Thursday, one day after Hurricane Michael’s bombardment left homes splintered to their foundations, roads and water systems compromised and hundreds of thousands of people without electricity.

• An 11-year-old girl, Sarah Radney, was killed on Wednesday when a carport was torn away and was sent hurtling into the modular home she was in, said Chad Smith, the coroner of Seminole County, Ga. “She was sitting right next to her grandmother,” said Mr. Smith, who described the girl’s death as a “horrible accident.”

• A man died on Wednesday after a tree crashed down on his home in Greensboro, northwest of Tallahassee, the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office said.

Hi Lilibet, just checking in, any updates on your uncle and his wife?

Thanks Magz. No word yet. I can’t imagine that their home survived unscathed, or survived at all. They are in a little subdivision with canals running behind each house, on the tip of a point on the ocean. I’m sure he would have evacuated, but it may be bad where he went in Georgia. I will email again today and report back when I hear from him.

I didn't catch the details of who and where, it was one of the towns on the coast, but about 45 minutes ago on the Weather Channel a rescue person of some sort said they are working to pull people out of homes who survived the storm but are trapped in the ruble. Somehow some people survived this.

CNN saying death toll now at 5. Search & rescue going on in Mexico Beach.

Brooke Baldwin letting a few survivors they found use their satellite phone to call loved ones...very emotional.

Realizing how very helpful news outlets are in these tragedies. They risk a lot but also have special resources like their satellites. Last night CNN, and I'm sure others, was the only way some mayors and representatives could get the word out about their conditions and needs because communications were down.

None sweeter than Brook Baldwin, I am so glad she could help some people this way.

As we are waiting for our WS peeps to check in. --I so hope everyone is safe and ok. Our Georgia and Carolina peeps are not being covered as much in the news.

It's going to take a long time to recover from the wrath of this storm.
