Replying to my own post to add info from the article.

Apparently he was a healthy 78yo. Fell ill after dinner and drinking.

"Then, a family friend traveling with the couple called Brown with a strange demand.

'Your father needs surgery or he’s going to die and they need $50,000 and you need to send it with a copy of your passport, the front and back of your debit card and an authorization stating that you would allow them to withdraw $50,000,' Brown recalled the friend telling her."

More at the link.

Oh yeaaahhh!! Earlier I had mentioned I watched some videos from expats, etc a few months ago and this was a huge thing that was mentioned!! The corruption in the medical field! That they will let you die if you don’t pay them what they need!

YouTube was a treasure trove of information—I still can’t remember why I was even watching these videos a few months ago...

A statement from Bahia Principe Resorts released Friday said, "We completely disagree with the dissemination of false information issued publicly which threatens the image and reputation of the company and the integrity and rights of our employees and their families, reserving, where necessary, the right to take appropriate legal action."

The statement didn't say which information hotel officials considered false, and added that the resort is cooperating with authorities' investigations.

Neither the Excellence resort nor the Dreams resort immediately responded to requests for comment Friday.

Well that’s just a bunch of BS

Sounds like all they care about is their reputation.

People are dying and that’s all they have to say??

The deaths were reported at three properties: the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana; the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville in San Pedro de Macoris; and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana. An assault took place at the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana Hotel, allegedly by a person wearing the uniform of the resort.

TripAdvisor currently has a warning badge on the pages of all three hotels, alerting travelers to “media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing.”

As for the Majestic Elegance hotel where the assault allegedly took place, reviews of that resort are currently suspended as people have flooded the page with negative reviews that are not from firsthand experiences, which violate TripAdvisor’s terms.

I think we need to take John Corcoran off the list according to the family. see below

The family of John Corcoran has denied that his death has anything to do with other tourists who've recently died while visiting the country.

“My father had a heart condition,” his daughter, Nichole Lande, told People. “So his death didn’t come as a complete shock to us. Obviously, we didn’t expect him to die, and we are devastated. But it’s just a coincidence that it happened in the Dominican Republic like those other deaths.”

Without an autopsy no one can be sure. moo

For what it's worth? ( Daily Mail article)

The family of Leyla Cox ( the last victim ) was told the toxicology machines in the DR were broken, so there was no toxicology done.

Staten Island woman, 53, is SEVENTH American to die under mysterious circumstances in Dominican | Daily Mail Online

It costs money to run a valid toxicology laboratory, not just in equipment but also in terms of technologists and supervising PhDs. I would think DR might just not have any quality Forensic Toxicology scientists and have to refer specimens to other countries. Which costs $$$.

My guess is that DR is not going to pay money to routinely do toxicology on the death of tourists. The broken machines is just a weak excuse.

And the terms "cardiac arrest", "pulmonary edema" "cerebral edema" are in most cases going to be accepted without challenge in the case of older tourists who have some known medical condition. They probably don't even do histologic examination of the organs.

I hope the FBI does issue information about the quality of DR Forensic Death examinations. I suspect it is very poor.

Another American Tourist Mysteriously Dies In Dominican Republic

Ok I’m seeing Bahia Principe in both La Romana and Punta Cana.

I wonder if there could be an employee link there since it’s the same brand resort. Just a thought. I realize there are other resorts as well...

Could be more than one cause for the illnesses and deaths - tainted alcohol here, pesticides there, bad a/c, etc. The problem could be a country with widespread corruption in safety and legal regulations, not limited to one thing.

IDK, speculation only.

jmo
That’s sure what it’s sounding like!

And I'm adding for clarification: Medical toxicology would be available at a larger hospital, but they wouldn't be able to do much more than alcohol and perhaps urine drug screens. But I'm thinking the DR Medical Examiners aren't going to put out that much effort for tourists, especially as the results would not hold up in a court trial as there would be no chain-of -custody for the specimens
