GUILTY NM - Five Griego family members murdered in their Albuquerque home, 20 Jan 2013

I believe he was in control of all of his faculties when he instigated the killing of his family.
He was just an angry young man and acted out his anger.

He was not schitzophrenic. He was able to try to lie his way out of it. If he had a psychiatric problem he would be giving reasons that border on paranoia. JMOO

An Albuquerque teenager charged with the 2013 murders of his parents and three young siblings pleaded guilty Friday.
Under a plea deal, Nehemiah Griego, who was 15 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his parents. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

(...) he is entitled to a hearing to determine whether he will be sentenced as an adult or juvenile. A district court judge will decide at a hearing in January.

If sentenced as an adult, Griego could face up to 120 years behind bars. If sentenced as a juvenile, he would be held in a juvenile detention center up to the age of 21.

A New Mexico teenager who pleaded guilty to killing his parents and three siblings can be rehabilitated and should not be sentenced as an adult, his public defender argued Monday.

Nehemiah Griego, 18, has made progress at a state psychiatric treatment center, attorney Stephen Taylor said as a weeklong hearing to determine Griego's fate got underway. Investigators, witnesses and psychology experts are expected to take the stand.

Griego was 15 when authorities say he fatally shot his family at their home south of Albuquerque in January 2013. He pleaded guilty in state children's court in October to two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

If sentenced as a juvenile, he'll receive treatment until he's 21 and then be released. If as an adult, he could spend 120 yrs in prison.

The Latest: No proof teen had brain injury, expert testifies

"A medical expert says a brain scan of a New Mexico teenager who pleaded guilty to killing his parents and three younger siblings doesn't prove he suffered traumatic brain injury or hemorrhaging.

The testimony from Neel Madan, a clinical radiologist and neurologist at Tufts Medical Center, came after a defense attorney argued that Nehemiah Griego was beaten so severely by his father that he likely suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Madan testified Monday at a hearing to determine whether the 18-year-old Griego should be sentenced as an adult. But Madan cautioned that it isn't possible to completely rule out any diagnosis from the MRI alone — including mental illness or even brain injury..."

Judge to decide on sentencing teen as an adult in the murder of 5

"...“He was unable to leave the house or unable to leave his father’s watchful eye except for time’s when he went to church,” said the defense attorney.

The defense claimed Griego has mental health issues, possibly schizophrenia. They also said the teen may have suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of repeated beatings on the head from his father.

The state’s first witness Monday was a radiologist who showed the judge pictures of the teen’s brain. The witness said he couldn’t see clear signs of abuse, but said he couldn’t rule it out either.

On Monday, a forensic psychologist also took the stand. He said he did not show signs of mental health problems.

“To me, it seems matter of fact, detached, not the level of emotional reaction that I would expect if it was troubling,” said Forensic Psychologist, Kris Mohandie...

The hearing is scheduled daily through Friday and then February 10-12."

Messages show teen texted girlfriend about wanting to kill family

"ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The hearing continues over whether a teen, who murdered his family, should be sentenced as an adult. On Tuesday morning in court, KRQE News 13 learned Nehemiah Griego tried to pin the mass murder on someone else at first.

Testimony shows the then 15-year-old made up a story before admitting to shooting his five family members.

Tuesday a sheriff’s department detective took the stand. He said Griego quickly came clean but made up a lie at first.

Also Tuesday in court, disturbing text messages were described between Griego and his then 12-year-old girlfriend before the murders. A detective said the messages reveal both Nehemiah and his girlfriend had plans to kill their parents, but she backed out.

The detective also said Griego tells his girlfriend he’s feeling insane in the messages. The defense asked the detective Tuesday if the girlfriend seemed to be egging Griego on and he said yes..."

The therapist for a teen who killed his family took the stand Thursday during a hearing to see if the now 18-year-old should be sentenced as an adult...

His therapist, Chery Laiken, said Griego was intolerant and racist when she first started meeting with him. But she says it’s something he was taught. Aiken testified that Griego is getting better and is treatable. If it’s proven Griego is treatable he would be sentenced as a juvenile and be locked up until his 21, instead of life.

Teachers, State Workers Describe Teen Who Killed Family

"A state worker at a residential treatment center for juveniles on Wednesday described the New Mexico teenager who shot and killed five family members in 2013 as having matured into a role model for other troubled boys at the facility.

Meanwhile, one of 18-year-old Nehemiah Griego's teachers said he was a good student but had expressed racist viewpoints and a fascination with history, war and Nazi Germany.

The testimony from staff at the state-run Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center in Albuquerque came during the third day of a hearing that will determine whether Griego should be sentenced as a juvenile or an adult for killing his parents and three younger siblings...

"There were times that he cried," said Armando Heras, who supervises Griego and other teens at the treatment center, when asked about Griego's demeanor at the facility. "I assumed he was crying because he missed his family."..

Several witnesses for both the prosecutors and the defense have said the teen was physically abused by his father, a former pastor at an Albuquerque megachurch and Army veteran who had trained his son to use firearms and tasked him with guarding the family's home.

At least once, Griego was beaten so severely he lost consciousness and likely has suffered traumatic brain injury from the abuse, public defender Stephen Taylor said.
In court on Wednesday, Heras testified that Griego arrived at the facility with an intensely quiet and reserved personality, but he eventually began to open up, socialize with others and carry himself as a leader.

"It was hard to get him to talk about his problems and what he was thinking about," Heras said, when asked about Griego's demeanor when he first arrived..."

Teen killer 'didn't have any emotion,' man testifies (with clip)

"...the public gets to hear from people who spoke to him before he was arrested...

Johnathan Kottenstette said he was with Griego’s girlfriend and her grandmother at church the day of the shootings, which took place in January 2013.

“(I heard) that they died in a car crash or something and that he's on his own and doesn't have anybody now,” Kottenstette said.

But when Kottenstette questioned Griego himself, he said he heard a different story -- that someone broke into the house and killed them all.

“He was just saying, ‘My family, the corpses, they’re all over the house,’” Kottenstette said.

Kottenstette said it all sounded strange, so he told another church member, Vince Harrison.

“He didn’t have any emotion,” Harrison said, regarding a conversation with Griego. “I wouldn’t say cold, but he didn’t have any emotion.”

And when no one could reach Griego’s parents, they called 911..."

Time to address the connection between mass shootings and mental health

"...The main debate in this case is whether Griego’s mental health issues are amenable for him to be set free after only a few years of treatment. While the severity of mental instability is unclear in this case, it brings to light a big problem that has been affecting the U.S. for quite some time: mental health.

There seems to be a ridiculously normal pattern of mental health issues among mass murderers in the U.S.

To name a few, Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza suffered from Asperger’s Syndrome. Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes had a history of unfinished psychiatry treatment and the former Tucson Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shooter Jared Loughner showed signs of schizophrenia.

When it comes to mass shootings, the topic usually brought into conversation is about gun regulations. However, no one ever addresses what drove these people to commit these crimes in the first place.

We have made it something very normal to just mark the shooting off as a mental instability incident and then move on with our lives...."

A New Mexico teenager who killed five family members should be sentenced as a juvenile, a judge ruled Thursday.

20-yr-old who killed parents, 3 siblings to remain behind bars for now
http://www.kob.com/albuquerque-news...nts-3-siblings-to-remain-behind-bars/4819995/
„ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 20-year-old responsible for the massacre of five members of his family who was set to be released on March 20 will now remain behind bars.

The New Mexico Court of Appeals has reversed a 2016 district court ruling and ordered a new hearing to determine if Nehemiah Griego – who turns 21 on the day he was set to be released – is amenable to treatment.

That hearing will also determine if he should be tried as a juvenile or an adult following the murder of his parents and three younger siblings in 2013.

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas initially filed the appeal to reverse the 2016 ruling.“

According to this article, the new hearing will begin tomorrow.

'A New Mexico man who killed five family members as a teen is set to return to court Monday for a weeklong hearing to determine whether he has been rehabilitated while in state custody.

It is the second such hearing for 21-year-old Nehemiah Griego, who three years ago pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in the shootings of his parents and three siblings at the family's home south of Albuquerque...

In New Mexico, the maximum sentence for a crime committed by someone the court considers a juvenile cannot extend beyond the person's 21st birthday.

That means Griego would be released if the judge decides he should be sentenced as a juvenile. If Griego is sentenced as an adult, the judge could have considerably broad discretion over his sentence, with the maximum penalty being 120 years in prison.'

Fate of New Mexico man who killed 5 as a teen revisited

Possibly released..... oh my goodness.
I believe he is capable of killing again if he's let loose on some unsuspecting populace.
