Iowa news today: April 29: 467 more COVID-19 cases in Iowa, 12 additional deaths
467 new confirmed cases today and 12 more have passed away. We now have a total of 6,843 confirmed cases and
148 have passed away. 2,428 have recovered. 323 are currently hospitalized with the virus at this time with 42 in the last 24 hrs.
Reynolds defends lifting COVID-19 restrictions I listened to the pc this morning. IMO-Governor Reynolds and the IDPH were very irriated this morning. IMO-they don't like to give straight answers to the questions either.

He is not the only one saying it though. Not many kids get CV to study it, from what I can tell. Very few have died from it and so there is not much to go on IMO.

We need antibody studies - and there are now quite a few. I've been summarizing a lot of them.

You can't know the infection rate until we test for antibodies. We aren't testing children for antibodies in any broad way for the reasons I mentioned above plus, of course, we're mostly testing the symptomatic.

Children are definitely mostly asymptomatic. But if you look at the antibody data we do have on children, children are indeed getting it. There's a big difference between getting it, being mildly ill and developing antibodies and never getting it.

Adults seem to have a harder time forming the antibodies. We already knew this about other viruses (and once people are around 80 years old, we know from many studies that their immune systems are not as strong as they used to be - and there's a huge genetic component to that).

You don't even have to study "kids with CV," that's not the main stat that we need.

We need to know how many children have CoVid19 antibodies and most places do not even have really good antibody test kits, much less the lab and medical resources to do Ab testing right now.

In most places, it's all hands on deck for actual treatment of sick people. And it's going to stay that way for another year. We won't have Ab data on the adult population to the degree that we need it for months.

No one is going to go into schools and poke kids and take blood to test Ab's when schools open. I'd be very surprised if any state mandated an invasive poke for kids to get them so-called "immunity passports."

Adults studied at random (who were out on the streets of New York City) showed that 15% of them had had CoVid but had no symptoms.

Darden Restaurants reopens Olive Garden, other chains in some states with masks, temperature checks

The Orlando-based company closed all of its more than 1,800 dining rooms in March and shifted to takeout because of coronavirus. About 100 restaurants in Georgia and 11 in three counties in Tennessee have reopened so far, spokesman Rich Jeffers said Wednesday.

Darden — which owns Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Yard House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Bahama Breeze and Eddie V’s — also is preparing for other states that are set to open again. With restrictions on how many people can be inside the restaurants, not all employees will be back to work.

“We are staffing the restaurants based on the guidelines from the local officials,” Jeffers said.
......
Restaurant analyst John Gordon said the amount of restaurants reopening seems like a lot at this point.

“There’s quite a bit of research indicating customers aren’t ready to return to dining out until they feel safe,” Gordon said. “A more moderate approach could have been to roll out a smaller group of units and tested and then rolled out more units based on those results similar to what Starbucks announced yesterday."

Heartfelt briefing Governor Cuomo today. Cuomo, Just the Facts

He mentioned how nice it was for the "Thank you salute," dedicated to the health care workers. "That was nice, saying thank you is nice, but how about rewarding them and making their lives easier, hazard pay, child care," and more examples.

more
"Thank you to the Front Line Workers who risk their lives every day. The fire department, the delivery drivers who go to 50 doors a day, nurses and doctors in the emergency room, the police officers, who go into homes because of a domestic disturbance, the EMT. They are All doing the work.

Front line workers are heroes, they risk their lives every day, showing up not because they get paid a lot of money, not because people say thank you and god bless you...
They are doing it because it is their value, their honor, their pride, their dignity. They show up. Even when it is hard, they show up. We need to make sure they are protected, they have the equipment, PPE, they have our respect, our gratitude and make sure they are tested and they get the results so they can take care of themselves."

There was much talk on politics that is not to be discussed here

“This is a self-portrait of America,” says Cuomo pointing to a wall of masks sent from around the US. “And you what know it spells? It spells ‘Love.’ “A little bit more of this and a little bit less of the partisanship and the ugliness and this country would be a better place.”

There are caution signs that we need to pay attention to. Singapore was under control and they are now seeing a second wave, with 900 new cases

"Singapore reported 1,426 new infections on Monday, a record jump in Covid-19 cases as it battles a new wave of infections in dormitories housing migrant workers."
Coronavirus latest: US warned about reopening, Singapore cases hit record

Germany relaxed and started to reopen, they are seeing an increase.
Germans have been advised to stay at home as much as possible and continue to apply physical distancing as official data appeared to indicate the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic was once again accelerating.

I do not cry easily. But, watching Gov Cuomo's address this morning made me weep .

“New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy took a brief moment of silence during today's news conference for the more than 6,000 people who have died from coronavirus across the state.

The governor said the 6,770 people who died from the virus in New Jersey is more than the number of residents who died in World War I, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, both gulf wars — Afghanistan and Iraq — Superstorm Sandy and 9/11 combined.”

Nevada:

“Sisolak also explained that the reopening of the state's casinos is still a long way off.

"The opening of the casinos and the gaming enterprises will probably come into third or fourth phase of what we're going to end up doing," Sisolak explained.
"We're just not quite ready yet to handle that type of a volume," he added.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has drawn attention and scrutiny with her calls to allow casinos and most other local businesses to reopen immediately.

"It's not something as simple as flipping a switch and suddenly everybody's going to come back to Las Vegas," Sisolak said after being asked about her remarks. "We've got to work on the travel part of this."

Sisolak said that he will formally unveil his state's reopening plan tomorrow.”
