Murder investigation launched after Australian woman's body found in Georgia.

Local police have launched a murder investigation after the body of an Australian woman was found in woodlands in Tbilisi, Georgia.


According to a statement from Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ms Edwards had been missing since she went hiking in Mtatsminda Park, in the capital Tbilisi, on the afternoon of July 30.

The ministry said sniffer dogs and other specialist units were involved in the search operation, and her body was found the following day.

I think so too. There's this from the article that leads me to believe they either have video or audio:

Video has emerged after the murder of Melbourne teacher Shanae Brooke in Georgia as details of her suspected killer are released.

Police are doorknocking residents in an eastern European city with a picture of a man potentially responsible for the rape and murder of a Melbourne woman on a solo hike.


Agenda.ge editor-in-chief Natalia Amaglobeli — who has been working closely on the case for the Georgian news site — said residents in the area had reported being visited by police who, according to local media, produced a “portrait” of a potential suspect with blonde hair, and asked if they recognised him.

“The neighbours say that the person (pictured) has a slim, athletic body type,” Ms Amaglobeli said.

“He looked to be in his 30s.”

The Georgia Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Tbilisi Police Department would not confirm whether or not they had a suspect and did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

She was last seen on video surveillance when she left the apartment at 15.15 local time on Friday.

Her hair was tied back, she wore a black hiking suit and carried a green backpack as she walked to the tourist point.

Her last post on social networks was an Instagram photo of her on the mountain, with the caption “Joy.”

Later that day, the woman wrote in the “Expats in Tbilisi” Facebook group that she heard “a woman screaming on the paths under the Mtatsminda Park” about an hour after Shanae left home.

She was called upon to contact the police as members of the group organized a search.

In the end, Shanai’s body was found near a mountain trail by a search party that included police officers with rescue dogs, volunteers, and her friends.

Others urged her to report what she saw to police, while several reported separate incidents of harassment by one or more men in the same area previously.

Probably identified as a suspect through the sketch then confirmed by DNA, the "old school" DNA method before 5% of the population voluntarily registered theirs in "genealogical databases".

I'm glad police in the nation of Georgia was able to carry out an effective investigation although it kind of sounds like this guy may have been a serial rapist before this.
