SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — NEWS10 has received an update regarding Samantha Humphrey, a 14-year-old reported missing by the Schenectady Police Department Sunday night. State Police Aviation have been called in to assist in the search.

PIO Irwin confirms that her jacket was recovered along the shore of the river in Riverside Park. Police are still looking for any help they can receive from the public at this time.

Update to the ABC News10 article:

Note: An earlier version of this article provided incorrect information regarding a jacket found at Riverside Park. The story has been updated. NEWS10 apologizes for the error.

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady police are hoping a coat will yield clues to the whereabouts of a missing teenager.

Police on Tuesday morning said they located the person who took the photo of a black winter jacket with a pink-colored fur fringe that has been circulating on social media in connection with the teen’s disappearance.

They hope the person — and the image — will help find Samantha Humphrey, a 14-year-old who was reported missing on Friday night. Police learned of the photo after it was shared on social media.

The jacket appears to match the description of what Humphrey was wearing when she was last seen. Police said she was wearing a black and pink puffy jacket, bell-bottom jeans and tan Timberland boots.

The photo appears to depict the jacket floating in shallow water.

Police said they are continuing to treat Humphrey's disappearance as a missing persons case.

"It's still a very active investigation," Sgt. Nick Mannix said Tuesday afternoon. "There's a ton of information being circulated online now. Our detectives are trying to investigate and go through every lead coming in, which is a lot."

Mannix declined to comment on the details related to the coat, including the person who took the photo and the possible presence of blood on the clothing, citing the ongoing investigation.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — As the search for missing Samantha Humphrey continues, family and friends have also joined in the effort to find the 14-year-old, all while fearing the worst.

The search for Samantha is now in its fourth day, and it has become a heartbreaking situation for her family and her grandparents, John and Dianne Matarazzo. “You read about it,” said John “You hear about it with other people. But you never think it’s going to happen to you. That’s the thing.” His wife Dianne shared with NEWS10’s Anya Tucker that the New York State Troopers searching the water told her they were committed to finding her granddaughter. “As long as there’s a chance she’s there. And that’s where I think she is. I just want her back. “

For days, Schenectady Police and NYSP have searched the Mohawk River and its banks. Helicopters could be seen flying low along the waterway and drones high in the sky above. But so far, there’s been no sign of the 9th grader.

It was by the river in the Stockade area of the city that police say Samantha was last seen around 11:30 p.m. Friday. Her grandparents say the teen had met up with an ex-boyfriend. “They came down here, I guess. That’s the last…” John said as his voice trailed off a bit. “They found her jacket. But her phone, we can’t find that. I just bought her a brand-new phone, and she wouldn’t be 2 inches away from her phone,” he added.

Police Wednesday called the search “ongoing and extremely active” and continued to ask that anyone with information contact investigators at 518-630-0911.

“As always, we ask the community to call with any information that will lead to the safe finding of Samantha,” police wrote in a release. “Additionally, we are asking the community to avoid any speculation via social media or other outlets.”

Police also indicated that “due to the location of where Samantha was last seen,” they have conducted searches using the New York State Police Aviation Unit, its dive team and the city police drone unit.

A unit from the New York State Police Underwater Recovery team could be seen scouring the Mohawk River behind the Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady on Wednesday afternoon as the search continued.

The boat traversed the river shortly after 2:00 p.m., with police divers submerged in the water as yellow police tape blocked the pedestrian path behind the casino down to the shore.

The unit has been diving since Monday and have been searching the water during almost all daylight hours for the past three days, city police spokesman Sgt. Patrick Irwin said later Wednesday.

Police have also used K9 units from city police and state police.

“We have received numerous tips and leads that we continue to investigate and follow up on,” the police release said. “We are working around the clock to find Samantha and bring her home; this remains a missing persons case.”

Mother calling for help in finding missing daughter as police search Mohawk River

What I find especially noteworthy -

Jaclyn says Samantha's phone records show her last calls where to her ex-boyfriend. She says Samantha's ex spoke with Samantha's brother after Samantha was reported missing and confirmed to him he was with her Friday night and said the two had had an argument.

Ok, so it's officially on the record that Samantha argued with the last person she was known to have been with, and in the late night darkness of a deserted place. What, according to this boy, did Samantha do next? Go storming off? Call for a ride?

How old is the ex boyfriend exactly? In the grandparents' article they said he was "around her age" but when talking about people this young, even a year or two can make a difference. Like for instance, how did he get to this river? Did he drive himself?

SCHENECTADY — Days into their search for a 14-year-old last seen near the Mohawk River, Schenectady police are asking the public for help finding another missing girl.

The search for Hajile Howard appears to be connected to the ongoing effort to find Samantha Humphrey, whose grandmother on Thursday said they two were close friends.

Hajile, 14, was reported missing Nov. 9. Police said they do not believe she is in danger or the victim of foul play but they say they want to talk to her.

Police sent out the alert on Hajile late Wednesday and so far have said nothing about whether they want to talk to her about the disappearance of Samantha, who was last seen Friday in Riverside Park, the Stockade park that borders the Mohawk River.

Dianne Matarazzo, Samantha’s grandmother, said the two teenagers knew each other.

“They were pretty close friends,” Matarazzo said on Thursday. “I don’t know if Samantha knew where Hajile was or not.”

On Thursday, Sgt. Nick Mannix, a city police spokesman, said police don't believe there is a link between the two disappearances.

He also sought to allay any fears that may exist in the community.

"There have been no leads saying that there's a serial kidnapper or anybody out there attempting to kidnap young girls. There are so many leads that are coming in every day, we're just expending our energy and doing the best we can to make sure that we're following each lead that comes in to completion," Mannix said.

DEC 1

Samantha Humphrey’s mother confirms to NewsChannel 13 that the jacket found near the Mohawk River last weekend and posted on social media was definitely her daughter’s.

Sources tell NewsChannel 13 that Samantha was involved in a physical altercation with the ex-boyfriend late last Friday night before she went missing.

The Schenectady County District Attorney is now involved with the police investigation of 14-year-old Samantha Humphrey, who hasn’t been seen since Nov. 25.

One of the reasons is because his office has subpoena power. The police department does not. He wouldn’t elaborate on that. However, it may signal that detectives are beginning to pivot from a missing person’s investigation to a criminal probe. According to Samantha’s mother, Jaclyn Humphrey, her daughter came to Riverside Park late last Friday night to meet up with an old boyfriend. She says the two got involved in a physical altercation.

I hate being less than 10 miles away from this and feeling so useless. Like all I can do is sit back and speculate. Maybe walk around the neighborhood looking for…..I don’t even know what because LE never shares info with the public. It’s very defeating.

“She says the two got involved in a physical altercation.”

How does she know of the physical altercation?
