Australia- Nine people stabbed including 9 month baby @ the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction, suspect fatally shot, Sydney, 13 April 2024

Do we know how many security guards engaged with the perpetrator? I don't think we do. I've only heard about two, but I imagine a centre the size of Westfield Bondi Junction would have a larger team than that, and Myer, as a department store, may have even had its own security/loss prevention staff.

9News is reporting that 3 security guards were stabbed - two of them died. (linked below)

I don't know if that is the total of security officers who were involved though.

The Age article you linked contains CCTV that shows Insp Scott running towards the killer, followed closely by 4 members of the public, one of them carrying a metal chair. Looks like they were running after Insp Scott to help her, if needed.

I have to admit, I haven't been watching the videos, even the ones I've linked to. Some cases, I make the choice not to, and this has been one of them, so I'm probably missing things, though I'm doing my best through text media to keep this thread up to date.

Yeah, we know two of those members of the public are the French construction workers. No idea about the other two.

At a news conference, Lowe was asked if Cauchi had a knife obsession and had ever called the police on his family for taking away his knives. Lowe responded: “We’re aware of an event in 2023 which we’re investigating.”

But Cauchi had never been charged with any offence relating to knives, or found to possess knives in an unlawful manner that would warrant prosecution, he said.

In French, "go away" is "Va-t'en."
Humble, Brave and.... Handsome ;)

That's true. I can't remember exactly what was quoted, but it seems pretty irrelevant now since the "bollard men" are definitely French!

In fact, "vas-y" means "go there", so the opposite. The things people hear when a foreign language is being spoken! Wrong language (Ukrainian...), wrong phrase.

Amazing that Insp Scott gave the killer CPR after she shot him and threw the knife away from him. I guess she did her duty right to the end.

imo

This video made me choke up and goes some way to restoring my faith in humanity

Those men putting themselves in danger to protect others and helping bring an end to the attack - even at the end working with the lone police woman so she wasn’t left completely alone with the attacker - what beautiful people.

Also I read further up about the dying mother passing her baby to a stranger to get them to safety - what a harrowing decision that must’ve been for the mother I guess at that point she knew she wasn’t going to make it - let’s hope her actions in death have a positive outcome and her baby survives - the whole world is behind you little one.

Somebody decided that this person suffering from severe mental problems
could be relied on taking his meds and wander unsupervised in the society.

And when atrocity happened everybody is surprised and outraged.

The vast majority of people with mental health conditions are not a risk to society, even unmedicated and unsupervised.

What is clear from what has come out so far is that the perpetrator did not have a history of violence or criminal behaviour.

Not in this case though.

Unfortunately for his victims :(

My point is, we cannot forcibly medicate and supervise everyone with a mental health condition because of the random, tragic actions of one person who gave no indications he would hurt anybody.

If there is any way this could have been handled better, I'm sure it will come out at the inquest, but right now, it's looking like something that could not have been foreseen or prevented.

I would think a schizophrenic indulging in drugs was a time bomb.
Oh, and "sleeping rough" and sharpening knives.

But then,
what do I know?

RIP to innocent victims :(

Unfortunately it’s not that simple. My brother has suffered badly from poor mental health over the past 20+ years. He goes through periods of psychosis where I have called police with concerns about behaviour and usually the response is unless he threatens to harm someone or harms himself they cannot do anything. He has been hospitalised many times but not as many times as he should have been.

It’s alarming when you are dealing with people who are so unwell who can cause such devastation because they’re not right.

Luckily he is on a community order now where he has medication injected but until his behaviour escalated there are long periods of being unmedicated.

I have a brother who also has episodes of schizoprenia and he too has his medication injected. He has had itinerate periods and has travelled up and down the east coast and hails from Toowoomba (snap) and played with knives as a teenager (snap).
He went to the same school as Gerard Baden-Clay and Bruce Lehrmann (who liked the same strip club as Joel (snap)) -- but lives a peaceful existence, shuns shopping malls and is divorced.

Cauchi clearly has an interest in sex, visiting strip clubs and providing escort service on several sites. Leaving me to think that IF these stabbings were gender related, it may have been done out of the frustration of being alone. (Similar to other 'Incel' related crimes) IMO
