GUILTY PA - Jenna Burleigh, 22, Philadelphia, 31 Aug 2017 *Arrest*

In fairness, the neighborhood is not "criminal infested." Two separate police forces patrol the area. At least three cameras, one in the pub, two on the corner, covered about 320 feet route to the house. The area is well lit and there was an emergency phone at the end of the block.

There is little be afraid of on the street.
This is a very important point. I think everyone's initial reaction to JB's disappearance was "oh my God, North Philly, Temple is too dangerous for suburban white girls!!!", but the reality here is that Temple knows that the North Philly neighborhood around the campus is not a very good neighborhood, and they also know that no one will come to the school if they can't keep their students safe, even drunk at 2AM at a bar, like all college kids like to do. Temple has very thorough and rigorous security right around the campus, and Temple itself is not really any more dangerous than other urban college campuses in any big city. Remember, the perp in this case is a white dude from the suburbs who was a student, not a local from North Philly. This case has little or nothing to do with the "hood".

Maybe she got nervous at the end of the night about being alone so tried calling her friends to meet up with her to walk/take her home and when she couldn't get in touch with them, he offered for her to come to his apartment to wait until they answered or until she could get a ride. IMO it's one thing to be at a bar having a good time without your friends, but then it's last call and reality sets in ... "oh crap how am I getting home"

I wonder why she didn't call an uber to pick her up and take her home.

Has anyone read the book 'Gift of Fear' by Gavin de Becker? The premise of the book is that we should listen to our gut feelings and instincts. I think Jenna had an instinct that Burleigh was dangerous and reached out to friends. Sadly she didn't listen to those feelings. I am sure he was charming coming across as helpful and she let her guard down.

I totally agree. Having worked for a University myself right smack dab in the middle of a city it is what it is.
The students are made aware of city living because not everyone is street smart. There are many that prey on these drunk out of their minds college students. Mostly they are jumped and robbed of any vauebles and they are told not to walk around at 2am alone.
I am not saying that Jenna was that way but just presenting it.
Cities can be dangerous places at night, especially when there is easy prey. And in this case the scenario is different as it was a student and not a random ****.

That map shows the wrong side of Broad Street. It shows North Philadelphia East. JB was killed in North Philadelphia West

This is the correct one: http://data.inquirer.com/crime/neighborhood/north-philadelphia_west/

North Philadelphia West has marginally less crime than North Philadelphia East.

My daughter's dorm is across the street from the pub. She's lived on campus for 3 years, you need to use your common sense, like in any city. She chooses not to be out at night but I wouldn't worry if she went out at night in a group. I would worry about a young girl by herself anywhere. We live a short distance from where Molly Bish was taken, it's about as safe and country as you can get and it still happened here.

To clarify - "was a student" - more accurately - had previously been a student and has a criminal record in three counties. Not currently a student. Currently employed as drug dealer, from the evidence. The area is notorious for crime and criminals. Not a place to be alone, if at all.

Noelle Sterling is the neighbor of Joshua Hupperterz, who has been charged with killing Temple University student Jenna Burleigh

Sterling testified at a hearing that she heard screaming coming from his apartment the night he allegedly killed Burleigh

She said the screams were like 'a horror movie' and lasted for three minutes

A cousin of Hupperterz testified that when he came by later that day he found the defendant cleaning up blood in his apartment. The cousin said Hupperterz, whose hand was stitched, said he cut it on a beer bottle. The cousin said Hupperterz asked him to move a large heavy blue plastic storage container to a Jenkintown garage belonging to the defendant's mother.

A Lyft driver testified he used a car the next day to take Hupperterz and a large blue storage container from Jenkintown to the defendant's grandmother's home near Scranton. Not long after that, authorities went to the grandmother's home. There, the prosecution maintains, the body of Jenna Burleigh was found stuffed into that storage container.
